5 points tooo close. We lost the title because

1.Pinki in 55kg tested positive. Didn't participate. Only 4 wrestlers, we would have got 20 points at least(silver)

2.Sonam 62kg injured didn't participate today. By her form she'd have won at least silver (20 points)

3.Our 50kg, 68kg, 76kg aren't the best. Hope they are not sent to Sofia. Nirmala Devi, Divya and Kiran must be the 3 there and we can get at least 2 quotas.

Finalists in first day of freestyle:

57: :IND Ravi vs :IRI Sarlak

65: :IND Bajrang vs :JPN Otoguro

70: :UZB Khasanov vs :KAZ Talgat

79: :KOR Gong vs :IRI Savadkouhi

97: :KAZ Yergali vs :IRI Shabani

65kg final between old rivals will be match of the competition.

for Iran, our 70kg guy was extremely disappointing  Ghiasi at 65kg also got manhandled by Otoguro in the semifinal. he is a very poor wrestler and I wasn't expecting anything more from him. the other 3 made it to the final. I believe Savadkouhi and Shabani will win the gold. Sarlak will be underdog against the world bronze medalist.

medal table in men's freestyle after the first day

:IRI 1-2-1

:IND 1-1-3

:KAZ 1-1-0

:JPN 1-0-2

:KOR 1-0-1

:UZB 0-1-1

:KGZ 0-0-2

today we had wrestlers from :TKM:IRQ:PAK:PLE in the bronze medal match, unfortunately all of them lost

and as for Iran, it was a terrible terrible day, very disappointing. our 57kg and 65kg wrestlers lost to world class wrestlers, that was expected. but Hosseini (70) and Savadkouhi (79) lost to wrestlers much weaker than themselves. we brought our best wrestlers in non-Olympic weights (unlike most of the Olympic weights) and they were terrible here.

Shaabani dominated the competition to win the gold, good for him. I believe he and Mohammadian are almost in the same level. it will be hard to pick one of them for the Olympics but Mohammadian has the upper hand now.

Finalists in second day of freestyle:

61: :UZB Turobov vs :KAZ Askarov

74: :KAZ Kaipanov vs :IRI Hosseinkhani

86: :IRI Yazdani vs :IND Deepak

92: :MGL Tsogtgerel vs :IRI Ghasempour

125: :KGZ Lazarev vs :KAZ Boltin

it was a very disappointing tournament for our freestyle team. Majid Dastan at 61kg was very poor and Taheri at 125kg lost by pin to someone very weak. he was leading 6-0 and then bang got pinned. we will have 3 in the final but Yazdani and Ghasempour winning the gold was a sure thing even before the tournament.

Yazdani is trying a different style here, probably preparing himself to wrestle more than just 1-2 minutes (he usually finishes his matches that fast) I just hope Deepak Punia doesn't chicken out like he had in 2019 worlds. he most probably will lose 10-0 but Yazdani needs more time on the mat. this is his first international tournament in past 2 years! (exactly since the day he beat Deepak by walkover in the worlds final)

men's freestyle medal table

:KAZ 3-2-0

:IND 1-2-4

:KOR 1-0-3

Iran won the team title, but despite winning more gold medals, Kazakhstan lost the 2nd place to India.

it was a disappointing tournament for our freestyle team. Iran won only 3 golds which is NOT a good results in 10 weights. but those 3 guys teched all of their opponents and were quite dominant. our 125kg lost by just an accident and he could tech everybody too. we were expecting at least 4 gold medals from these 4 guys but we didn't even achieve that

Yazdani despite beating everybody (including world silver medalist Deepak Punia) 10-0 tried a new style. not wasting his whole energy in first 2 minutes. he was calm and just collected points without trying too much. Ghasempour also dominated 92kg, what a pity he is in the same weight as Yazdani and had to try a non-Olympic weight. he is just too good to waste his talent behind Yazdani :(

out of 20 wrestlers we sent here (Freestyle and Greco) only Yazdani will wrestle in Tokyo for sure. Shabani (97kg gold medalist) also has a chance but there will be trials between him and Mohammadian. for the others, they had to win the gold and also be dominant to stand a chance. I assume they missed it, except 125kg guy, they will probably give him another chance.

    • There is a saying to never trust a Russian in gymnastics. Well, ex-Russian turned Bulgarian Elvira Krasnobaeva is transferring now to Armenia.   The "official" reason is for personal, family matters, but in reality it's most likely because she wasn't selected for Paris, which angered her parents. Even though she is only 16, had her breakthrough just this year and started making mistakes, when they amped up the difficulty.   Our Federation's President Iliana Raeva said today, that she received calls also from France and Azerbaijan about Elvira's mother basically auctioning her. Raeva mentioned, that Krasnobaeva was going to be a vocal point in the next Olympic cycle, but now she can hit the road and missed her chance to ever compete for Bulgaria, even if she wanted to in the future.    We are also going to make a new Group from next season. After the disappointment in Paris, 4 out of the 5 girls announced their retirement.
    • true, but was expecting India to get troubles from Australia, not from New Zealand, and specially not by being bowled out. Makes the group phase interesting though
    • The 4th best team in the world beating the 3rd best team in the world is not a huge surprise though.
