Huge sprinting talent Johannes Klaebo of Norway sets the fastest time in qualifying

Third place for Estonian Marko Kilp, who seems to be quite a weird kind of athlete. In his previous 15 attempts, he has qualified for the knock-out stage only once..and how, by finishing 3rd in the Liberec 2013 qualifying. And now all of a sudden he gets another 3rd place out of the complete blue :d

No final for Oestberg and Bjoergen, Nilsson beats Falla in the final :d

Now it's time for the men's final and I think we might just see the first World Cup victory of a new phenomenal cross-country skier..the way Klaebo has been flying up the hill before the last turn is amazing.

Great debut for Klaebo. :yes The inexperience cost him the win, but the future is very bright for him. Goldberg as a reserve getting the win shows once again how monstrous team Norge is. :)

Exactly that, I think he was a little too eager to dominate all the heats before the final :p

Nilsson and Golberg winners in Ruka season opener

Stina Nilsson SWE wins in Ruka

Stina Nilsson SWE wins in Ruka

Stina Nilsson of Sweden and Paal Golberg of Norway have won the opening competitions of the Viessmann FIS World Cup Cross-Country 2016-17 season in Ruka, Finland.  Snow fell throughout the competition creating challenging conditions for the athletes as they raced around the 1.4 km course.  As the heats progressed the final climb back to the stadium saw the competitors in the herringbone technique unable to stay in the tracks.  Both Nilsson and Golberg managed the climb each round and proved strongest on the final stretch to the finish.

For Nilsson it was her first ever win in classic technique.  Just one year ago she took second place to Norway's Maiken Caspersen Falla but got her revenge today with Falla taking second place.  In third was Heidi Weng of Norway.

On the men's side Paal Golberg of Norway who learned just 3 days ago that he would be traveling to Ruka took the first win of the season.

Golberg who trains outside the National Team was brought to Ruka in replacement for Petter Northug Jr in the sprint and recorded his 4th World Cup victory.  In second place from Sweden was Calle Halfvarsson grabbing his first ever World Cup podium in a classic sprint.  In third place another Norwegian reserve made good on his opportunity to start in Ruka.  Johannes Klaebo the young rising star on the team was announced Tuesday as the replacement for an ill Eirik Brandsdal, and captured his first ever World Cup podium.

Competition resumes tomorrow with 10/15 km interval start competitions.

    • Apparently this season will be last one in Kamil Stoch career if his results wont be enough good for his standards.
    • Such a nice one for Colturi ! That was fun. It almost looked like a script with the cameras focusing on Colturi a couple of times before her first run and showcasing the potential of youngster and she didn't disappoint.      I hope Colturi skis for Albania forever. So much fun to cheer her with the Albanian flag.    I don't get it why everyone is being so critical of Colturi, you got no right to criticize a personal decision, as most European nations use imported athletes in many sports like wrestling and cheer them on like their.   Would you spend hours criticizing Frank Chamizo for switching to Italy rather than playing for Cuba?

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
