Let us look at the qualification process in swimming as I understand it

1.Any swimmer, up to two per event per country, who hit the FINA “A” standard can go to the Olympics, in the first priority. India has no swimmer with an A standard ...... will any hit the standard by july 5th ..... seems unlikely at this point of time but anything is possible

2. The next priority will be athletes in relays,  where the first 12 from the 2015 World Championships will go, and the remaining 4 spots in each event will go to the next-best 4 teams in the qualification period in approved qualifying events.

No chance here as we are not eligible

3. Up next will be the Universality places, where countries who have no swimmers with an “A” time or a selected “B” time may enter up to 1 man and 1 woman for Rio, presuming that man and woman competed at the 2015 World Championships. Each can swim in just 1 individual event. If a country has a male swimmer invited, they can invite 1 female swimmer under the Universality rules, and vice-versa.

i presume India will select 1 man and one women for  Rio .... India had sent 8 swimmers to the world championships ........aaron , sandeep , virdhawal , saurabh and sajan in the pool events and mandar in the 10 km swim , two women nikita ( 10 km ) and shivani ....... I am sure that India will select the best man and women from this group .... The swimmers who did best sajan prakash , virdhawal and sandeep ...so I think India will select one of them ........ and from the women shivani most probably ..............
4. Up to the cap of 900 swimmers (the same as London), FINA will begin inviting swimmers with “B” times. By July 5th, 2016, FINA will inform “B” standard swimmers of their invites (up to 1 “B” swimmer per country). The change, and this is significant, is that FINA may continue to invite swimmers with “B” standards above the 900 quota to ensure that every country represented at the 2015 World Championships will have an (eligible) swimmer at the Olympics.

I think we will get an opportunity to qualify one more swimmer , but that will depend on the timing in B .....in this supriyo mandal may be amongst the highest  ranked close to 110 in 200m butterfly ...........but that depends on FINA

I feel hence in swimming we may have 2 men and 1 women from the above group

" where countries who have no swimmers with an “A” time or a selected “B” time may enter up to 1 man and 1 woman for Rio" - this doesn't make sense if the selection of B swimmers is after the universality selection - havent gone through the rules doc myself but seems like there will be just 1 "B" swimmer per country - either selected through universality or invited by FINA. So a Supriyo may get invited, despite not participating in the 2015 world champs, but then India wont get an additional universality place as well...

I too feels that one male and one female swimmer will qualify from India.

No quota won from grand prix yesterday. I hope today we win atleast 1 quota in wrestling today.

In London Olympics their was 7 categories in GR men as well as FS men and only 4 was for women. But this time one category was removed from both men events and it has been added to women category. But as we know India is do well in Men FS only and that too in lower and middle weight category and that category which is removed from Men FS comes from this category, that is why with just one day left for wrestling qualification we are still down one quota place from last time, Last time we won 4 quota places in Men FS And 1 in women. This time we have won just 3 in men FS however we gained one in Men GR. However it will not be a good news for Indian wrestlers and for whole sports community, if we go with lesser quota in wrestling because in last Olympics we won 2 medals in this sports. In boxing also we are in danger of wining lesser Olympic quota from last time (and that too in big numbers). Boxing and Wrestling has given us medals in last two olympics, but with our performance going down in both these sports, lot of rectification work is the need of time.

In fact just to add, though we will have more athletes this time, we might just struggle to reach 6 medals, specially with badminton going down recently, do not expect anything from boxing and just 1 from wrestling, we have to do well in Archery and Shooting, let's hope for the best.

dont be  demoralize so early, I am fully confident that we will cross 10+ medal mark. Hoping for 2 or may be more in shooting, 1-2 in Archery, 1-2 in wrestling, 1-2 in badminton, 1-2 in boxing, may be 1 come as surprise from gymnastics. All 12 shooters are capable of wining medals on their day, same is for players of Archery, badminton (singles), wrestling and boxing. So we will have at-least 20-25 serious medal contenders.

I think boxing has gone down mainly because of the shambolic state in which our boxing federation each. Also overall, we have not been able to capitalise on the gains made in 2012. I think what we should also focus on is not only how many athletes we are sending - but how many of them have a realistic shot at medals. has that increased since 2012? I think in shooting we have a great contingent -while Jitu is a huge contender -Abhinav Bindra -I predict is going to go out with a big bang. gurpreet, narang, Chain Singh ,Apurbi and Ayonika are all contenders. The time has also come for our trap and skeet competitors to step up. I am hoping for more than 2 medals from Shooting this time. In Archery, Deepika will hopefully be calmer and more matured this time -and her recent world record equaling score show she is in good form. May be we will have our first medal in Archery this time. In Wrestling - Yogeshwar Dutt seems poised for a second medal barring fitness issues. No chance of a medal in boxing this time. in Tennis -there is the same confusion as last time - will be hoping Sania can do something with the right partner in mixed doubles. In badminton -while recent form has been bad for the Indians - our girls have real class and can turn it on and beat anyone on their day. Too bad they will have to face tough opponents early this time due to the drop in rankings. It is sad we haven't been able to add too many disciplines from which we can qualify. Golf is of course new -and we will have athletes there. And Gymtastics is a welcome addition - Dipa karmakar's exploits will surely motivate others.

I think thats being overly optimistic - realistic medal chances are - 3 in shooting (could be more), 1 in archery, 1 in wrestling. Bandminton , tennis -outside chance. Boxing no chance really. It is sad that our govt couldnt give the push to the momentum we got in 2012. this time we should have been looking at sure shot 10 medals and hoping for many more. Instead we are scrambling to reach even six. The farce in boxing never seems to get over. Apart from shooting and perhaps archery- I see no federation who is not quarreling and messing up.

I don't think we have even any outside chance in tennis because you cannot win medals in tennis unless you have some good singles players. Just see the list of medal winners below, maximum medals in doubles events were won by those pairs who have at-least one good singles players, where as Bryan brothers are double specialist and they both are playing together for  whole of the session. Where as now our both top ranked players who are looking to qualify are playing with non Indian players.  Saina Mirza and Rohan Boppana have to choose an Indian partner, with Rohan may go with Paes, Saina dont have a good partner with whom she can chase a medal. In ATP events these single great players don't participate in double events and ATP double events contains only double specialists but in Olympics these great players like Federer,   Murray, Tsonga forms a good double team with their country-mates. In Olympics due to this Double becomes much harder than other ATP events.

What does everyone think about the Sushil Kumar -Narsingh scenario? should we take the huge risk of sending Sushil who hasnt basically competed in 2 yrs and is moving on agewise?

The Indian wrestling authorities would conduct a bout between them and the winner will most probably represent India at the Rio in that weight category. I think a heavyweight name like Sushil always adds an extra advantage ( not that applicable  about wrestling but if it would have been boxing , Sushil should have been the choice for sure ).
