Team GB medals after Day 15

Rank Gold Silver Bronze Total
2 27 22 17 66

Farah and Adams maintained their Olympic titles from London, Liam Heath won the K-1 200m and we also got some bronzes from Vicky Holland, Bianca Walkden and the women's 4x400 relay. With that, the total of London 2012 has been surpassed, with one more secure medal to come today.

Great job for the best British team ever indeed. :yes I've never expected second place ahead of China!

Team GB with 16 4th place finishes is equally as impressive and shows growing strength and depth, exciting times for British sport and I hope this time grassroot levels also capitalise on a new wave of sports enthusiasm.

Plan to turn GB into snowsport superpower

Britain aims to be one of the World's top 5 dominant powers in snowsports by 2030

Well that's the plan revealed today by British Ski Snowboard and the team behind making it a reality is some of the same team behind the success of British Cycling and Team Sky.

The UK’s national governing body has marked out a clear strategy working towards Great Britain challenging for world class and Olympic medals, not only in the Park and Pipe disciplines where they are already one of the leading nations, but in all skiing and snowboarding disciplines.

The first phase of the vision will involve following in the footsteps of GB Park and Pipe and putting in place a world-class coaching structure for each Olympic discipline. With these coaches, British Ski and Snowboard will develop the longer term strategic plans geared towards medal success. The plans will be based around identifying, supporting and retaining the best British snowsport talent and engaging them in sustainable, funded, high performance programmes aimed towards podium success at major international competitions and the Olympic Games.

Raising funds to bring this vision to reality will also be a key part of the strategy, with British Ski and Snowboard approaching fundraising in a number of unique ways. At the start of the season, the innovative British Snowsports Fund was launched. The Fund asks the UK’s recreational skiers and snowboarders to make a small donation to the country’s future Winter Olympians when they make a purchase with one of our confirmed industry partners. The scheme currently has 25 partners, including major travel companies and retailers. The British Snowsports Fund was launched alongside a new grant-making charity, the British Ski and Snowboard National Foundation, which will support young talented skiers and snowboarders as well as efforts to increase grassroots participation in the sports.

With British athletes already clinching five World Cup podiums, two X Games medals, and an Air + Style podium, 2016-17 has already proved a fruitful season for British Ski and Snowboard, particularly for the GB Park and Pipe team. And with the Alpine World Ski Championships already in full swing, and the Freestyle, Snowboard and Nordic World Championships on the horizon, there is still room for even more British snowsports success this season.

That means investment and performance programs will be set up in events Britain hasn't ever had a serious chance of a medal in like Ski Jumping, Alpine Snowboard, Moguls and Aerials.

The new plan aims to deliver progress over the coming decade and take Britain from a nation that needed 90 years to win its first Olympic medal on the snow and make it one capable of claiming up to 12 in a single go.

  • 2 weeks later...

UK Sport reduced funding for Weightlifting, Table Tennis, Badminton, Fencing and Archery to absolute zero for the Tokyo 2020 cycle.

I'm not going to comment further about how ridiculous that is. A slap in the face to the men's foil and badminton team, especially.

Not so much if you were you were a native or African American! Anyway judging by your current POTUS you guys seem to be quite keen on tyrants these days with the possible exception of Chinese ones. In any event have a great day and take care with the celebrations given current circumstances.

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
    • The worst editions in XXI century for us were Vancouver: 5 medals (only 1 gold for Razzoli's on the penultimate day) and Sochi: 8 medals (but no gold). Turin was already a prelude to this bad period, although the number of gold medals was ok. Overall we won fewer medals at home than in 2002 and this was probably the only case in the 21st century when the host country won fewer medals at home than 4 years earlier, either in summer or winter. In general the years 2008-2016 were very bad in our sport, both in summer and winter. Only 2018 in Korea was a slight rebuild + 2 fantastic summer editions in Tokyo and Paris. in Beijing 2022 we won a lot of medals - 17 but only 2 gold (If it weren't for Gogga's injury, I think it would have been 4 gold).
