Kazakhs get it done

Women’s team advances in Olympic Qualification

Players and staff at the Kazakh bench celebrate as the players on the ice seal the tournament win in the Olympic Qualification.

Kazakhstan won the women’s Olympic Qualification Preliminary Round Group G on home ice in the capital of Astana. The Kazakhs won all three games with a combined score of 10-3 and will move on to the next round in Stavanger, Norway.

The tournament started with a surprise. Qualifier Mexico, ranked 11 places behind its opponent, was leading 2-0 against Great Britain after the first as well as after the second period. It took some time but the British fought back with three goals in the last ten minutes including the last two in the last 81 seconds of regulation time to win the game 3-2.

In the game that followed it was again the underdog that started scoring but host Kazakhstan eventually beat the team that eventually ended up in second place, Poland, 4-1.

Sylwia Laskawska gave Poland the lead at 12:45 but two minutes later Meruyert Ryspek tied it up for Kazakhstan, which outshot Poland 34-27 after a slow start. Three unanswered second-period markers – two from Daria Moldobai and one from Zarina Tukhtieva – gave the host nation the win.

Kazakhstan continued with a 3-1 victory against Mexico and when it needed one more point to seal the tournament win it beat Great Britain 3-1 as well.

If became tense in the end. Karina Felzink was assessed a match penalty for checking from behind and British captain Katie Henry brought her team back with the 2-1 goal. However, with 54 seconds left Tatyana Likhaus netted the puck into the empty net to seal the win.

It’s my first goal for the national team at this level, the emotions went wild. We were relieved. It came in a very good moment,” Likhaus told the Ice Hockey Federation of Kazakhstan’s press service.

Led by strong goaltending – Daria Dmitrieva (nee Obydennova) had a 95.59 save percentage in her first national-team appearance since 2013 – and ten goals coming from eight different players including three from defenceman Moldobai, the top-seeded Kazakhs ended up where they wanted in front of their home crowd.

We only have the most positive emotions. We worked, competed and we won,” said Galia Nurgalieva.

Poland finished the tournament in second place. After the opening-day loss they beat Great Britain 4-3 and blanked Mexico 5-0. Great Britain was third and Mexico last although the team that advanced from the first round to Astana surprised with tight results as it played opponents of that level for the first time in the team’s young history.

In the next round Kazakhstan will compete against opponents who played one tier higher in the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship program. At the tournament in Stavanger, 16-18 December, they will play against host Norway, Slovakia and Hungary. The tournament winner will advance to the Final Olympic Qualification.

Italy goes to France

Women’s team wins in Olympic Qualification

14910500_10154597178395900_3121617049179

The Italian players are all smiles after winning their Olympic Qualification group and keeping the dream of PyeongChang 2018 alive.

She looked into the camera with a Basque-style beret on her head she received as a present from the organizer and with a big smile in her face. She had all reasons to smile. Captain Carola Saletta and her teammates just won the tournament in Donostia-San Sebastian.

After beating the Netherlands 5-1 in the deciding game the Italian women’s national team reached first place in its Olympic Qualification Preliminary Round group to advance to the next round.

The Netherlands had the upper hand in this pairing between 2012 and 2015 until the Italians started to move up the ranking step by step with a fourth-place finish at the Division I Group B tournament in 2016 and confirmed the trend also in the Olympic Qualification.

Both teams entered the final day with a clean record. The Netherlands took the first place after two days and beating Slovenia 14-1 and Spain 2-0. Italy edged Spain 2-0 as well in its first game and beat Slovenia 8-1.

In the final game the Italians made sure it won’t be a narrow battle from the very beginning. Chelsea Furlani opened the scoring after just 29 seconds of play. The Vermont-born forward, who has been playing in Italy since 2011, then doubled the lead with her power-play marker at 7:03 and three minutes later Silvia Carignano made it 3-0.

For the Netherlands the game looked almost over before it even really started. The Dutch came one goal closer when Mieneke de Jong scored at 3:46 of the second period but her match penalty for tripping Furlani five-and-a-half minutes later harmed the team.

Eleonora Dalpra deflecting a shot from Linda de Rocco and Anna de la Forest de Divonne capitalized on the five-minute power play to make it a 5-1 lead that was there to stay until the end of the game. With these goals De la Forest de Divonne (1+7=8) and Dalpra (3+4=7) took the top spots in tournament scoring.

We won thanks to our team spirit. We dominated this game and I’m very glad about the result. Now we will prepare for the next round,” said Italy head coach Marco Liberatore according to the website of the Italian Ice Sports Federation.

For the next round the team will travel to the Paris region. In Cergy-Pontoise the Italians will play host France, Latvia and China from 15 to 18 December. The winner of that group will remain in contention for a sport in PyeongChang 2018 and advance to the Final Olympic Qualification in February 2017.

For host Spain the tournament ended in happy mood as well as the team beat Slovenia in a game for third place, 5-1. Since joining the Women’s World Championship program in 2011, Spain has never been ranked ahead of Slovenia and lost its two previous encounters 5-3 and 3-1. The Spaniards made the difference with four unanswered goals in the first 13 minutes of play including two from Ainhoa Merino.

Great turnover from Italy. They were 0-2 down against Latvia after 1st period but managed to win the 3rd preliminary round group 1 opening match 3-2.

btw the second Italian goal was scored by player number 22 probably the athlete with the longest name I ever seen Federica Zandegiacomo-Miistrotofolo , try to say it 5 times fast :d

It's hard for an italian too :p

So, we have any chance to win against France? I'm not an expert of female hockey

    • Baffling scheduling again. It's like FIS want to drive people away.    It's the Finals, on paper your big conclusion to the season, yet it feels like "let's get this over with". Just compare how the ATP treat their finals with this.   Ok, you want to have the GS & SL on Tuesday/Wednesday. That's fine, i've been advocating for more mid-week starts to begin with. But why, oh why do you have them in the middle of the day, on a work week.  Why aren't you having them in the evening, in prime time, when people are off work. Make it a big special event, which people want to visit and not during the day in front of a 100 fans. It's not that hard to choose a place with some floodlights.     And even this week we don't have Champion League football, so the night is free from big competition. Perfect opportunity to have alpine skiing on TV right now, but noooo.
