Biathlon 2016 - 2017 Discussion Thread

By the way... interesting start lists (zeroing allocations) for the IBU Cup mixed relays.

The single mix has Macedonia, Australia, Chile and BELGIUM. Yes, they apparently have a woman now.

Mixed relay has Greece and Spain.

And both of course have Hungary, Bosnia, Croatia, the UK and Moldova.

Should be fun to watch!

A Belgian woman, cool! Chile must be Claudia Salcedo (who was rather slow in Obertilliach last season) who apparently found a guy to compete with. I believe 10-12 years ago Chile had several athletes competing in Europa/IBU Cups, but it's been a while since I saw Chilean guys there. I know they have two 16/17-year old girls who are trying out biathlon, but I doubt they'll already be in the IBU Cup :p 

 

As for Spain, I guess it's Henar Etxebarria with a woman I don't know yet, since Vicky Padial is at the World Cup. Yet another interesting development!

 

Do you happen to know how to search for athletes from a specific country on IBU's new website? I want to search for all Belgian biathletes, but I can only enter family and given names..

Well I don't know of a way, but in Belgium's case their federation's website (the websites of many countries can be found on IBU's site under 'Federations') list a certain 'Rieke De Maeyer' as part of the IBU Cup team, so it must be her, she's the only female there.

Chile will be cool. She was quite slow, but it's great that she's competing. That means all the Latin American countries have done relays. Is Argentina competing this year, I wonder? Same strategy as Brazil, maybe?

I wonder about Greece's relay team, will the second woman be Nimpiti? I remember her in the JWC, she wasn't too great, but maybe she's improved?

I know Maria Cecilia Dominguez (who competed in the IBU Cup last season) has been competing in Brazilian rollerski competitions last months, but I didn't hear anything about biathlon..if I'm not mistaken, there were one or two young Argentinian girls at the IBU Development Camp in Argentina some months ago, but like with the Chileans, I guess it's too early to compete in the IBU Cup already. 

 

Where do you find the list of federations? I know what you mean (the list with the addresses/websites/e-mail addresses etc), but since they migrated to the new website I can't find it anymore :p

Yep, apparently she trains in Germany and her team there already announced she'd be in Ridnaun and Obertilliach in November :d

    • I think Julia Tannheimer will continue to perform so well on the flatter courses in Ruhpolding and Antholz, which will suit her technique. Oberhof will be more exciting, the courses are very demanding, but quite comparable to the World Championships in Lenzerheide. That's why I'm really looking forward to Oberhof this season. Anyone who can cope well with the courses in Oberhof should also be able to run at the front at the World Championships.

    • Thanks for your predictions, they are very interesting.   But here it will be a different format. Combined events - pairs of athletes, one male/female will perform in downhill and other will perform in slalom. E.g. Team SUI 1 Odermatt plus Meillard.
    • Interesting (optimistic) predictions for GB. Don‘t See Them winning 5 golds (more than China and as many as Canada). I think 3 golds are more Realistic (Brookes + 2 in curling/skeleton). Especially gold for Bankes seems To be a rather optimistic prediction, given that Casta is 11 years younger and just beat Bankes.
    • Medal Table (Change from 2022)    - 20 (+4)  - 13 (+1)  - 13 (+5)  - 9 (+7)  - 9 (=)  - 7 (+2)  - 7 (=)  - 6 (-2)  - 6 (-1)  - 5 (+1)  - 5 (+4)  - 4 (+1)  - 4 (-5)  - 3 (+2)  - 2 (=)  - 1 (=)  - 1 (+1)      -5,  -2,  -2,  -2, , -1, , -1, , -1 fail to male the list   On 1st glance 1 feel I have underestimated Canada, Sweden and Finland, and overestimated GB (obviously) and Netherlands.    If the Russians aren't competing then the Norwegians will have a field day in cross country skiing, but it is too early to tell.   World cups and championships aren't always the best measure for some sports but it's the best I can find.      As an overall trend I feel this will be a strong games for the European nations (home advantage) but the Asian nations might struggle, not necessarily at the extent I predicted here but I don't think their results will be as good as Beijing.

    • I don’t think that Scattolo would be slower/less competitive than multiple of your current starters, so as an Italian Coach I would Definitely give her a Chance in The World Cup.
