2026 Winter Olympics - Day 12 (February 18)

I was just looking back at our best winter total ever in Korea and we had so much depth and variety across so many disciplines. And we are non existent in sliding, figure skating and cross country skiing, that’s what really hurts. And the rise of Japan in freestyle skiing and snowboard  has taken so many potential medals away from us. Their youth program is so good. And then we will be retiring all of our speed skaters after these games lol.

What often happens is that Canada is a leader in new sports and women's sports because the rest of the world hasn't concentrated on them. Many other countries invest in these events, while Canada just runs on past accolades, and we get passed.

Look at aerials. We were one of the big leaders when it first came out. Now, we can't even make finals. Same with all freeski and snowboard sports. It's of course great to see other countries rise up in these sports and make them more competitive, but Canada doesn't try to keep up.

And you are right about the variety of sports. For the past 4 or 5 WOG, Canada won medals in 9 events (one of the most diverse medal sheets of any country). We're down to 5 right now, and can really only add another two potentially, with only 1 each in snowboarding and figure skating - sports we used to be very strong in.

The reality is we'll never challenge for top-3 again if we don't start to make inroads in the nordic events. Cross-country and Biathlon make up 20% of the medals alone. Throw in alpine, we're at 28%. Unless you dominate the sliding events like Germany, you just cannot compete getting shut out in those sports every time.

I agree. There's been some great results in cross country this Olympics and hopefully it will only go up from here because there is so many events and medals to get in the Nordic sports. I would heavily invest in the sliding events Its sad how much we have fallen off in them compared to before. In 2010 we got a bronze in the four-man. Then in 2018 we got gold, 7th and 10th in the two-man. Compared to this Olympics we were 18th and 23rd in the two-man.
