Total disaster for Hungary, which risks seeing both athletes eliminated before the laser run. The World Championships had already started badly with a DNS for Mihály Koleszár, reigning European silver medallist

:USA men didn't make the Semifinals.  Oh well!

Take a peek at qualis to see the primarily indoor competition...I like it!  (I didn't follow MP before Paris, so I don't really know how it used to be...I imagine much different.)

Yeah, having seen a few competitions this year it is actually not as bad as many of us Old Geezers thought it was going to be.  It's a genuine blend of skill and strength, and it usually does affect the final result.

i thought this was going to be awful having not watched the the new version yet but i commited to watching the semi because :GBR had interest, and i didnt totally hate the obstacle element :hyper:

the fencing knockout bit at the start is also a lot more fun to watch

As someone who is not pre-disposed to liking modern pentathlon (and who's long believed it should be axed from the Olympics)... credit where it's due, this new format is quite good.

The fencing phase in particular is much, much better than the old bonus round.

    • There will be specialized double sculls...just not for an NOC if it is entering singles specialists.   Either enter 2 singles specialists, or 1 XD specialist pair.   But they can in theory compete in both events, I guess, if they qualify...our top M, I think, does both.   But there are 17M, 17W, and 30 Pairs allotted in the quota, so I don't think the intent is that every singles entry will be in doubles.   (Perhaps this gets to fall in line with Weightlifting, where due to max entry quota, an NOC can't enter in every event, even if they have the best athletes...here, unless you have a pair who qualifies in both.)
