Summer Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 Competition Schedule Road to LA 2028

This is so great. Thanks @clemsonbeav.  I wish I had thought of using AI for this,  even with all the setup it no doubt saved time over doing it by hand.   You are to be congratulated.

Because it couldn't do everything all at once (could only handle one day at a time), it eventually suggested I use a Python script so I didn't have to wait on data limits in ChatGPT to reset.  So, that's what I ultimately did.  ChatGPT wrote the script and told me how to run it (as I'm not super keen on how to do it), so it was just a matter of me giving it the data (by editing the script, though I'm sure there were better ways to do it), and it took care of the rest, giving me the Excel file.  It had already created a color palette (per my request...rainbow order based on alphabetical sports, as @esube had it), and it was the one that actually suggested the emojis for the medal matches.  I just had to go in and tweak a few things.

How/where did you run the script? Through a software or....?

It was all done through the Terminal on my Mac.  It involved Miniforge, which I know absolutely nothing about...I was just following instructions from ChatGPT.  :)  It was just a way to run Python scripts on my computer without me having to download something (because I can't due to restrictions on the laptop since it's my employer's).  (I have done coding in the past, but running scripts was never my strongsuit...I was just crossing my fingers, and it worked!)

I'm definetly not waiting to the time when I need to start figuring out which events to attend.  I live near the valley sports park area so definetly will check out BMX, 3x3 , skateboarding.   But gotta go to many other events.

The one thing that comes to mind is that me, like all of us, during the games watching many things at the same time,  between tv, phone, tablet,  computer.  But in LA it will be mainly a going to events Olympics.  So not sure how to catch up.   But there are 3 years left so plenty of time left

I do not want to take away from this great achievement, with a color scheme that beats my homemade one by a mile, but... the start and finish times are only to the nearest half hour.  When I did this in MS Word, I was able to vertically split the cells to allow times to be displayed to the nearest 15 minutes.  I don't think it is possible to do this in Excel, but maybe there is a way?

No worries at all about the tip.  It's a feature that I'm not 100% happy with myself...but I just thought of a way to fix it.  Later today I should be able to get it.  :)

Brilliant!!! Thank you so much!

Now we are waiting for the detailed event schedule. I wonder when they announce it. Maybe next year... I don't remember how it was for Paris.

An amazing achievement!!!  More kudos @clemsonbeav.

As for the more detailed schedules, in looking back at my own versions from Paris, the events schedule was in place by August of 2022 (and it had events included).  I went to the federation websites to get the within-event timings (e.g. on the Athletics Day 1 schedule, what was the start time of the M 10000 race).  These were released gradually, through early 2023.   (Rowing, Athletics, Swimming, Cycling, maybe others)

The qualification pairings of the team sports went on through the first half of 2024, from January (Hockey) through June (Men's basketball).

It was pretty unusual for even this bare-bones schedule to be released this early.

Since ChatGPT is so good at schedulling, I asked him - just for fun - who are the main favourites for the possible Day 1 events in LA?

Welk, turns out ChatGPT is a bit conservative and boring - they mainly go for the current world/olympic champions.

But they predicted two big surprises imo as well.

    • Oh well.  Plenty people say that once you get past the first flush of youthful energy it is actually better long term to have a couple of post Olympic slow years and then start building back gradually after 18 months.  That is how Chris Hoy ran his career.
