Canada at the 2025 AQUA World Aquatics Championships

New 50 fly PB for Taylor Ruck in 25.71. Finishes 13th overall. Very impressive considering she was seeded 28th overall.

Or he had a bad swim :p

I mean he’s a bonafide medal contender in the 50 free, don’t think he would take it conservatively. And even if he was, why not scratch the event instead of racing?

No it was intentional lol. Now he doesn’t have to swim the semi-finals or finals. Allows him to focus solely on the fly.

I disagree, swimmers don’t intentionally try to miss a semifinal, they show up to compete. I play competitive sports myself, and that’s not the way I (or most athletes) think :p

He’s also a bigger medal contender in the 50 free than the men’s medley relay, so there’s that.

Although I do like the mental gymnastics you’re using to try and justify it, it’s a disappointing result and I get it :p

Swimming is like the one sport where you do ocasionally see swimmers treat a heat as a warmup. May not be what happened in this case but swimmers competing in the heats without any intention of qualifying (and scratching if they do) absolutely happens every Worlds and Olympics.

We've also seen athletes misjudge the time it will take to make a semi/final - like Sauvé said this himself after he set the NR in the B final. i think if Liendo wasn't serious about the 50m free he would have scratched it as opposed to purposely doing bad.

Probably should’ve used the word most before swimmers, because you’re absolutely right about that.

That’s not what I saying though. @Surlympics is trying to imply as if he took it easy to conserve his energy. I was saying he could’ve just had a bad swim/miscalculated the race. I’d say it was the latter given his form this week.

Yep, sometimes that’s indeed the case but he has no conflicts in his schedule and this is one of the three individual events he’s a medal contender in. Why would he do that?

Yeah this is Sauve though, we are talking about Liendo. He knew exactly what he was doing. If he was actually trying to qualify, even a bad race would have gotten him in. Anyways it’s not a big deal it’s just my opinion.

I don't know what the answer is with Liendo, but he didn't look good in the 50 butterfly or the 100 free, either. He's fine (not outstanding yet) in the 100 fly. On the flip side, he was outstanding in the mixed relay.

I'd also add in Kharun who hasn't performed at the level many people were expecting here. They both have one more shot in the 100 fly (besides the relay). I, and many others, were expecting several medals from them together, and leaving with no individual ones would be pretty bad. It's a year after the Olympics, so fair enough, progression can still come before LA. But haven't seen it here, yet, after a very successful Paris.

    • Honestly, I think you guys have a much better chance of success here than we do. It's already difficult to maintain this sport, and with this ridiculous format this year, things have gotten even worse.
