What bad luck for our talented :NED water polo team. They lost 13-13 on penalties against Serbia. But what a uneven draw for the second round!

In the second round, Groups A and C will meet. Five top countries and The Netherlands. Groups B and D will also meet. Only three top countries there.

:SRB:ESP:MNE:HUN:FRA:NED

:ITA:GRE:CRO:GEO:ROU:TUR

No chance for :NED to qualify for next year's World Championship with this draw. Such a shame, because they are really getting good.

For the third time in a row, the Dutch men's team has lost a good result against a top team. First, they gave away the victory against Serbia :SRB , then had a poor final quarter against Hungary :HUN , and today they squandered an 11-7 lead against Montenegro :MNE (11-15). Today was the most important match. A win would have secured the World Cup and kept their chances of qualifying for the Olympics alive. Unfortunately, their next opportunity won't come until 2030/2032.

The winner of the Georgia-Romania match will go to the World Cup. They were very lucky with the draw. I think our young team could have beat both of these teams.

For me organizing the European Championships in Water Polo in the middle of winter at the same time as the men's handball European Championships is, in my opinion, a complete no sens, but what can you expect from the LEN and FINA authorities? If the more absurd, it`s better for they, just like a radical change rules of play from last year... And it could have been done after the season in July/August:facepalm:

You'll be playing in the World Cup again this summer :) Is water polo a popular sport in your country, compared to things like handball or volleyball?

I meant World Championships next year. We participate in the World Cup this summer, that's true.

No, waterpolo is a very small sport in our country, unfortunately. But I think it is similar to handball. Volleyball is more popular.

    • Germany also fell hard in this discipline, the same thing happened to Russia - in 2022 they were much weaker than before. Romania – similar levels for years. France – strong growth until 2024, and now a decline again. Georgia – growth, but a large number of naturalized people from the Balkans play there. Generally, I see Georgia has been naturalizing a lot in various sports lately: water polo, figure skating, etc. Could that local regime there be spending much more money to further promote the country through sports?
