Kowalczyk definitely did too much, but she did not have the sponsors & had to race for money.

She was a representative of the typical Russian school - her coach came from the USSR, although he lived in Poland for many years. Not every organism would withstand such competition and training loads but on the other hand Kowalczyk had a bad skier technique (especially in the skate) and had to rely on endurance and strength.

In my opinion, she had sponsors, because Poland is a big country and sponsors can always be found if someone is very successful and Kowalczyk was very successful for many years. She simply operated in such a training and competition regime and couldn`t do it otherwise. She had to starts everywhere, because otherwise her form would be worse. She was not a skier in peak form for 1 event in the season.

Kowalczyk's coach was from Kazakhstan and yeah, that's the old Soviet school. Her training was very harsh and nobody in Poland could keep up so she was a one-athlete team for majority of her career. Some footballers saw her training in Tatra mountains in the summer and she was running up the hill with a tire attached to her waist with a rope. That's proper Soviet methods or what.

The sponsors were not there even after the bronze she won at 2006 OG, remember this was when our ski jumping was still at peak of popularity and Apoloniusz Tajner became the head of Skiing Association which made every other winter sport even less relevant. Kowalczyk only got some serious sponsorship (Orlen, PKO Bank, car manufacturers) after Liberec WC 2009.

In late 2000s she still travelled around Europe in a van with coach and two classic skis waxers from Estonia (Are Mets & Peep Koidu) that were the key part of the success (and many other feds wanted to buy them out but they stayed with her). She had different waxers for freestyle skis later on.

The other thing; she should have had a longer World Cup career - like Bjoergen, Slind & Johaug - but all the crazy training wore her out early, although she still went on the Ski Classics tour.

Good news for TV spectators: plenty fresh snow since Sunday.

Terrible news for wax techs; plenty fresh snow since Sunday.

Sophia Velicer fan spotted, including the actual Taiwanese flag instead of the nonsense Chinese Taipei thing :d

Noticed that they have changed her official name to Tsu Velicer, so obviously another one parent deal.  Certainly good enough to be on the World Cup given finance.

    • need to work on the celebrations... or just drop them?   Btw, these jerseys suck and I remember Zambia playing in all white with red numbers. At least they have orange on national flag but still...
    • British Columbia in general and Vancouver in particular are awesome and it’s great more people got to discover it thanks to Vancouver 2010.
    • And of course the British being famous for curmudgeons, there were always plenty of curmudgeons to quote.  Then of course from the opening ceremony and the cycle race on the very first morning it was obviously going to be triumph, so everyone just shut up for a while.
    • Yep, the amount of emergency services I heard at some point was a little extreme (for our little town), so I checked what was going on and saw they were all being called to a specific location. Until then I thought maybe it was part of a parade of trucks and agricultural vehicles that was on it's way from the next town over, decorated with lights and stuff.   Since I knew it was on the parade route, I was sure one of those big vehicles had hit people somehow (there were, besides the many vehicles, also two helicopters on the way, meaning it certainly wasn't about a single victim).   We picked our bikes and went to take a look, absolutely chaos in the area. Never saw so many services combined together, fire trucks from 20km away, ambulance after ambulance came racing by, people frantically trying to make way for them (the roads weren't really closed yet).   While there we heard someone who had been close say that the parade hadn't arrived yet and what seemed to have happened was that a car from the other side came onto the roundabout and simply never turned. "It's a massive drama over there, unbelievable", he said.   Quite quickly rumours started spreading of course, the first one turned out to be true: a middle aged (local) woman was behind the wheel and seems to have become unwell. Local security camera showed the car going at high speed right before the roundabout.   Plenty of rumours going around in terms of who were involved of course, and people keeping each other up to date to see if they know this or that family and such...   Never expected my little town to be big news in the Netherlands, even including some breaking broadcasts, live reporters and everything, damn. By far the biggest thing to happen here in my memory
    • This is the home town of our very own @heywooduand @brunamoura
    • For me, these were very good Olympics, and British sport benefited greatly from them, and is still benefiting. I fear it will be much worse here. Canada also benefited very good on Vancouver 2010 – this is very good see in the medal standings of subsequent Winter Games after 2010 and earlier.
    • Nobody hates Britain more than the British media so… I recall it being quite a pessimistic tone before the London games started.
    • I'm curious what was written before London 2012? Did they attack their own country, or did they just keep quiet?
    • Other winners at the PanAm Sports Awards Junior 2025
    • Very true point.  Although I think at this point everyone is just holding their collective breath until the test event.  The NHL isn't going to rage anymore until then because it's not like that would make the arena progress go any quicker
