After the successful European Championships for our women in the new categories, we decided to change it up for the World Cup.

 

Kontou, who last year was a big star in LW2X and this year in W2X, moved to W2- with Bourmpou and they didn't do so well, finishing 4th in the semifinal. However, I think they will stay together for 2028. They have only been together for a few weeks and Bourmpou wasn't training fully this year, and Kontou is new to sweep events. Bourmpou made A Finals at the last two Olympics, and is still only 24 yo. No reason why she can't fight for a medal in LA.

 

That left the remaining two lightweight girls for W2X, Anastasiadou and Fitsiou, and they are in the A Final and look like they can take a medal. Really it stinks for us that the lightweight events were removed from the Olympic programme as we 95% would've medalled again in LW2X.

 

And we have a bunch of U23/U19 world champions like Lykomitrou, Lioliou, Gkogkou, Dalidou, Asvesta etc. I'm curious to see where they'll fit into our senior squad in the next few years.

 

We also made changes in M2X, after our Paris LM2X bronze medalists failed completely at the European Championships, but neither of the two crews we sent were close to the finals. I wonder if maybe it is time for Gkaidatzis and Papakonstantinou to fully commit to coastal rowing for 2028. I think Cholopoulos/Makrygiannis will be our best M2X in 2028. Neither of them competed here.

World U23 Championships started yesterday in Poznan, Poland.

 

We are sending a lot of our U19 athletes, and so far they are doing quite well. 17 yo Giannoulis and 16 yo Mouselimis won their heat in the men's double sculls 

Of course, they easily won gold at the European U19 Championships a couple months ago but this is very impressive!

Overall some good results for us, we sent 7 boats and made 5 finals!

 

The only two boats that didn't make A Finals were M2X and M4X, probably because the athletes doubled up there. 17 yo Giannoulis and 16 yo Mouselimis won their heat but then started doing M4X races (with 18 yo Kamaledakis and 17 yo Alexiou) and ended up 9th in M2X and in the B Final for M4X.

 

Really we have other athletes that are actually U23s so I don't know why we mostly used our U19 team here. Athletes born 2003 and later are eligible and we have no one from 2003 or 2004, one from 2005, two from 2006, and the rest are U19s...

 

In the A Finals we have:

18 yo Cholopoulos in M1X

18 yo Diavati in W1X

18 yo Bourkas and 18 yo Chatziavgoustidis in M2-

19 yo Kontou and 18 yo Lykomitrou in W2X

19 yo Lioliou and 16 yo Mouratidou in LW2X

 

It would be shocking if we don't take gold in W2X and LW2X, and I'd like at least one more medal from the other finals, so I'll say 3 medals will be good for us here.

 

Really we shouldn't have had Giannoulis/Mouselimis double up and maybe they could've won a medal in M2X, and if we used some of our actual U23 rowers and sent crews for M4-, W4-, W4X then we could've had more chances for medals but clearly that's not a priority for our federation

Well yes, we got gold in W2X and LW2X, and silver in W1X 

 

4th in M1X and 6th in M2-. They will have many more chances in the future and the M2- have the World U19 Championships in a few weeks to look forward to

Watching the U19 worlds of yesterday....can anyone tell me where the finish line actually is? They stopped rowing in this general area, but...I don't see it

That's interesting, USA wasnt host for a long time.
