Two bad races for Beckett as well considering he’s a gold medal chance. Hopefully he has a better day of it tomorrow and can put a set of results together.

just checked, he finished 9th in race 2, that is acceptable, by no means bad. what makes it look bad is his first race score but hopefully that'll be his discard. in a class where there like 40 boats i'd consider consistantly finishing top 10 to be the minimum

There's something annoying about commentators incorrectly saying "Great Britain and Northern Ireland", when that isn't the name of the team. It's like they are trying too hard to be correct, and actually being incorrect, like someone who says "BarTHelona" in English

There has been a movement to rename the team the United Kingdom. Saying Northern Ireland just stops complaints from Nothern Ireland politicians. The BBC don’t want some of those having a go at them.

Usually just the athletics commentators that do it as its what they're used to, but it feels like some of them have had a word in their ear and being told to say it.

At least the very cringeworthy "Hong Kong, China" on OBS and similar aren't the broadcasters fault. A self-imposed one is just silly

I'm confused. I thought the official name of the team was Great Britain and Northern Ireland (or, to be very precise, the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team)?

No, we're registered with the IOC as just "Great Britain". I think Team GB/BOA like to use it in passing i.e. "320 athletes will represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Paris this summer..." but the official name is Great Britain. This is despite some teams insisting on a long name like Republic of Moldova or People's Republic of China etc

In athletics, we are "Great Britain & NI" but it seems very rare that United Kingdom is used in any case
