I suspect it is only going to get stricter as well. I can see for 2025 the time or distance needed to make the top 8 in either Budapest or Paris being mandatory for being selected.

In an ironic twist, one of the athletes selected by UK Athletes for a ranking spot, Pat Dever in the 10,000m has not made it in that event, falling below the cutoff.

Happily, Dever is safely in the 5000m (I wish he'd got in the 10,000!)

It shows the level of non trust at the moment.

Ah guy learmonth another athlete who failed everytime he did get selected, with that chip on his shoulder from when he didnt get picked to fail at the indoors earlier this year.

When influential athletes start complaining then this movement will gain traction, as it is the only ones complaining are the ones who never perform when they have been given the chance. Looking at you jade lally

To be fair to Learmouth, he wanted the opportunity to run in front of a home crowd - there's not that many opportunities for major sporting events to be held in Scotland after all. Sure he may not have exactly set the track alight but there was every chance that he could have/would have put in a decent performance.

I agree with you on your second point - nothing is going to change whilst the recognisable names of the sport speak out. That should have started earlier this year with the talking heads on the BBC - but given Denise Lewis' view of Learmouth was "he just wasn't good enough to be selected" and Ennis-Hill doesn't want to say anything that could be viewed as controversial, that's not likely to happen. I'll be interested to see if it is brought up again in Paris and whether Michael Johnson has a more forthright opinion on it (but I kind of doubt it). So, as you say, until you get the likes of DAS, Hodgkinson, Reekie, Muir, Kerr, KJT, Wightman etc. going public and criticising the sport, nothing will change and that should be worrying for everyone in the sport given we are due to host the Europeans in '26 and there is a real risk that if we carry on with the selection policy, GB will be missing from the majority of field events and have limited representation on the track.

It shows mainly there is a lack of trust and respect towards the those who make the decisions. We didn’t see this reaction from those left out from the swimming team.

On more positive news from Golden League:

new PBs for Nielsen in 400m (50.7) and Muir running a 3m 53 (in a race Faith breaks the WR in a ridiculous 3m 49), also massive PB for Bell in 5th (3m 56)

  • Latest Posts around Totallympics

    • Sinner destroyed Baez and we are still alive If I were Volandri, I would have Sinner and Berrettini play in the doubles.
    • Fewer people do do this sport compared to the 90s, less money is spent on it, etc. In the case of women, at some point this sport was almost abandoned because of the belief that it was impossible to beat Scandinavia ( the times of Norwegian domination with Bjoergen and Johaug at the forefront). Only in the last 2 years has Markus Cramer been hired, who is gradually rebuilding the men's and women's teams. Suffice it to say that the last medalist of the World Championships for Italy in the women's was Arianna Follis in 2011... I will also remind you that in 2022 Pellegrino and de Fabiani trained with the Russian team, because the rest of the Italian team was in such poor shape that they couldn`t train together
    • Well that is a totally different question  I too have wondered what happened to Italian cross-country and how there is no one coming for so many years. But it shouldn't take away from the sports where progress has been made.

    • Appetite grows with eating. Especially since it's not like we develop in every winter sport... For example, 20 years ago we were a powerhouse in cross-country skiing and now we have only 1 Pellegrino (34 age) and a few talented youngsters. And let's remember that our performance in Turin was objectively weak for us: only 11 medals in total. Now, when I hear that we will to win 2O+, some discipline must definitely add medals and also compensate for the losses in cross-country skiing, for example.
    • The problem is that this mixed team has never played together since then. There was talk of personal obstacles. I don't know how it`s now.
    • Well that explains why she is wearing more clothes with every passing day.   Nevertheless that team is still one of the best in the world and is a vast improvement on what Italy was doing 10-20 years ago.
    • Any idea where a full schedule can be found yet? I remember last seasons the website was always godawful in terms of providing that basic kind of information..
    • Constantinis team have made huge improvements since 2022 even if they are not best yet. And Constantini never was world leading in mixed doubles before Beijing olympic either so it is not like she really have lost anything since 2022 either, except not being able to repeat that success.
    • She had health problems yesterday. Nevertheless, after the gold in mixed doubles with Mosaner in 2022, I counted a bit more on her development. I still think that the biggest chance for us in 2026 will be the mixed team, rather than our teams.
