Ski Jumping 2020 - 2021 Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Much as I like any recognition for the absolute legend and walking piece of ski jumping history that is Noriaki Kasai, it seems a bit useless to give him a certificate for a record he'll improve with every single competition he competes in :p (and has been improving for years with every single competition, since the closest 'rival' is at 438 competitions and that's Ammann, who has of course been adding to his number as well)

Fun, useless fact I just came across: in Kasai's World Cup debut in 1988 (yeah), one of his Japanese teammates was Takuya Takeuchi, more than two decades later followed by Taku Takeuchi :p

The new calendar for the next World Cup was published by FIS a few days ago. You can find it HERE

There are only a few changes from the usual season we have. The postponed Sky-Flying Championships from this season will take the spot of the German round in the beginning of the season.

Lahti is moving up to January from it usual March (late February) spot, as to make room for a mini-Asian swing in February with Sapporo and the Olympic testing event in Beijing. Rasnov is also back, just for the sole reason to have a mixed event before the Worlds. A perfect combination for the rest period.

Yeah, don't be sure about this season being held at all.

If there is one competition format which will suffer the most right now, then that is definitely any given WC format, where athletes are required to travel from country to country on weekly basis.

Spain, for example, has already cancelled their equestrian 2020/21 WCs, scheduled for December...

I'm hoping they are, behind the scenes, thinking about a smaller season with competitions held within one or two nearby countries. Probably not feasible, but theoretically it might be possible to have two parts or something, one half of the season in Germany/Austria/Switzerland/Slovenia (if these countries agree, but since some borders are opening up, it might be possible), followed by something like RAW Air in Norway only. Not too much back and forth travelling should be at least a little helpful.

If by November, in this very topic the minutiae of the current season is debated, it means that there will be no brutal second wave and at least part of the WC can be held.

Fingers crossed for that but not 100% sure this will be the case

BTW, if it wasnt mentioned earlier, Sandro Pertile from Italy will be the new Race Director instead of Walter Hofer who retired. (The name of the new guy was a novelty for me, but it seems he was already nominated at the start of the 2019/20 season)

Yeah, Pertile had pretty much been following Hofer's footsteps everywhere he went for the entire last season as final preparation for taking over :p

    • Canoe Sprint There is a now a cap of 5 athletes per gender in the kayak events (down from 6 in 2024). The World Championships has been replaced by the Olympic Qualification Rankings.   K2 lost 2 boat quotas while K4 has gained 1 boat quota. Quota distribution is quite complicated as it usually is for canoe sprint. They also force nations to compete in a minimum number of events based on the number of athletes qualified; 2 and 3 athletes per boat class must compete in 2 events, 4 must compete in all 3 events and 5 must compete in all 3 events and have two entries in the K1 event.
    • Wrestling will have a completely new format, I do not like the changes. ranking isn't really a good idea in this sport, this will force wrestlers to compete in so many events to collect points. which is not good for their health. specially with the current UWW ranking points distribution system which is plain stupid   they are also gifting 18 quotas to very weak countries by that last qualification event. but I understand their point of view. can't wait to see lots of Russian wrestlers compete for weak countries for that 1 available quota.
    • Canoe Slalom Quotas from men's/women's K1 have been moved to men's/women's KX1. K1 will now have 14 quotas while KX1 will have 10 quotas. C1 remains at 17 quotas. Athletes may participate in other events up to a maximum of 2 athletes per NOC.   The World Championship qualifier has been dropped in favour of the Olympic Qualification Rankings (7 K1, 10 C1, 3 KX1), afterwards you have the Continental Qualifiers (1 per boat) and then a new Global Qualifier (2 per boat).   There were a few changes regarding ways to ensure an athlete can only obtain 1 quota. The biggest being at each stage the boat priority is K1 > KX1 > C1 for the rankings and KX1 > K1 > C1 for the continental/global qualifiers. This basically means if the same athlete qualifiers in multiple boats then the quota will be given to the kayak over canoe.
    • I'll post significant changes periodically. I'll start with the recently added/updated documents.   Archery The addition of mixed compound (12M & 12W) forced a reduction on the recurve side. The mixed compound quotas are distributed as follows   Host - 1 World Championships - 3 Continental Games - 5 World Ranking List - 2 Final Qualifier - 1   To compensate the team events will now only have 8 nations. 2 quotas were removed from the World Ranking List and 2 were removed from the Final Qualifier.   Individual recurve and mixed recurve distribution is the same
