Fencing FIE World Cup 2023 - 2024

Recommended Posts

and now, good luck to our coaches!

looking at this year's results, they just can't leave Rizzi out of the Olympic squad :finger:

Santuccio and Navarria are already untouchable (and world medallists last year)...

so, it should be down to Isola and Fiamingo...one most valuable as a reserve for the team event, the other one*...well, twice world champion, Olympic silver medallists, the most experienced individual specialist of the team, but an illusive, possible disaster if used in the team's competition (especially as a closer, which is normally her position)

*and also super-Greg Paltrinieri's girlfriend, which might play a role also for Greg's psych in Paris  :mumble:

I fear lots of arguing and social media shit incoming...

interesting draw also in the team event for tomorrow in Nanjing, with a :CHN vs :HKG clash already in the round of #16, then :KOR have the chance to eliminate their arch-rivals in the quarterfinals and seal the Olympic spot for :HKG, no matter what's the result of the above named Asian matchup

:EST have :FRA in the quarterfinals on their route to the necessary win, then :ITA / :USA as a possible semifinal's matchup

:UKR key matchup instead might be already the clash vs :SUI in the round of #16 (then, in case, the quarterfinal vs :POL or :JPN)

:BEL Neisser Loyola is going to fence the gold medal match vs :FRA Romain Cannone in Tbilisi (men's Epee) and therefore he gets enough points to overtake all of his opponents (especially :CZE Jiri Beran) and earn one of the two Olympic Individual spots available for the European players

meanwhile, in Budapest (men's sabre) the quarterfinals are:

:ITA Luca Curatoli vs :GER Matyas Szabo

:KOR Oh sanguk vs :IRI Alì Pakdaman

:HUN Andras Szatmari vs :FRA Sebastien Patrice

:ITA Luigi Samele vs :TUR Enver Yildirim

    • How wonderful!   I met the national rowing (and beach rowing) coach of EST/LTU/LAT on the way to ice hockey one day, who's Canadian by the way. I also flew home on the same flight as JC Schoonmaker's mom and friends, so we chatted for a bit.
    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
    • Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, has died half an hour ago He was in hospital since March 30th, just before the friendly match against Slovakia. Unbelievable how the life can have such turns...in March 26th he was in Istanbul playing the WC qualifying play-off vs Turkiye and now he died.    Thank you very much for every moments you bring us in your huge career (he's on 3rd place in a most trophies won in career, after Ferguson and Guardiola) and may your soul rest in peace, Mr. Lucescu.
