Just caught up with the lacrosse, and while the final itself had no excitement whatsoever, I still gotta admit it is quite fun to watch, looking forward to LA :d

I expect it’ll be a lot closer at the Olympics.

Edit: Well I mean I’d hope so, that was a pretty abysmal final, lasted until midway through the third until I switched it off :p

How can ski mountaineering be compared with orienteering? Is it roughly like a winter version (kind of like speed skating vs inline skating, not the same, but similarities), or just an entirely different kind of format?

Asking because I've never watched ski mountaineering and I sincerely hope it will be more watchable than the orienteering was here, where there were barely any split times shown, they kept randomly switching to people running in some spot and going back and so on. I think especially for a lesser known sport it is imperative to show it in such a way that new viewers can easily understand what's going on..

Well no, it has absolutely nothing to do with it. The core of orienteering is to take a map, a compass and solve the problem by finding the checkpoints. It's a very logical sport.

Ski mountaineering, on the other hand, is a pure endurance sport. It involves going up mountains with crazy slopes on a pre-defined route and, except for the individual event, the races are against other people. The Olympic format is certainly not very appealing, the least traditional of all, but it is a sprint of about 5 minutes where you have to climb a slope on skis (and there is a downhill section, requiring you to wear skins under your skis).

Ah, and there's also ski orienteering then (not in the Olympics, but in existence)? Because I'm sure I have seen a few minutes once of a sport where athletes on skis had a map, but that wasn't really possible to follow who was doing well :p

Ski mountaineering sounds a lot better to watch, thanks!

Great analysis, I will also add that after the downhill portion of the race, there’s a cross-country skiing component (it’s really short, athletes cross it in like 5 seconds) before you reach the finish line :p
