If LA 1984 Olympics were not boycotted, what would have been the results?

I have a plane to catch today, I won't be active in this forum next couple of days (lucky you, no more spam for some time),

but if anyone's want to carry on with this thread, do it please, you are free to go.

For me personally it is very interesting topic and i'm very curious how it's gonna look like when we finish with all 15 days of olympic events back in LA.

Bye!

  • 2 weeks later...

Day 2 events :

Cycling Track - Men's Individual Time Trial 1km

1. Sergei Kopylov URS 1.03.56 (FR1)

2. Maic Malchov GDR 1.04.17 (FR2)

3. Milan Hajek TCH 1.05.67 (FR3)

In this event, times were better at Friendships but every track is different, so I don't know what times would these guys get in LA.

Shooting - Men's 50m Rifle Prone

1. Petar Zapryanov BUL 599 (FR1)

2. Edward Etzel USA 599 (LA1)

3. Sergey Ivanenko URS 598 (FR2)

Here we need a shoot-off between BUL and USA athletes. I said gold for BUL - USA was on home soil, but BUL athlete was more experienced. He already had medal in 1980 olympics. So maybe he could be better...

Swimming - Men's 4x200m Freestyle Relay

1. United States 7.15.69 (LA1)

2. West Germany 7.15.73 (LA2)

3. East Germany 7.20.78 (FR1)

M 4x200 free final in LA was a swim-for-ages!!! Check it out if you haven't seen it yet:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4R0Mgiqs5g

Swimming - Men's 100m Butterfly

1. Michael Gross FRG 53.08 (LA1)

2. Pablo Morales USA 53.23 (LA2)

3. Glenn Buchanan AUS 53.85 (LA3)

This race was good as well. I wonder if Albatros would lose 4x200 if he didn't compete in 100 fly final on the same day before...

Swimming - Men's 400m Individual Medley

1. Alex Baumann CAN 4.17.41 (LA1)

2. Jens-Peter Berndt GDR 4.18.29 (FR1)

3. Ricardo Prado BRA 4.18.45 (LA2)

Swimming - Women's 200m Freestyle

1. Mary Wayte USA 1.59.23 (LA1)

2. Kristin Otto GDR 1.59.48 (FR1)

3. Cynthia Woodhead USA 1.49.50 (LA2)

Swimming - Women's 200m Breaststroke

1. Larisa Byelokon URS 2.29.13 (FR1)

2. Sylvia Gerasch GDR 2.29.62 (FR2)

3. Anne Ottenbrite CAN 2.30.38 (LA1)

Weightlifting - Men's 56kg (Bantamweight)

1. Naim Suleimanov BUL 297.5 (FR1)

2. Oksen Mirzoyan URS 295.0 (FR2)

3. Wu Shude CHN 267.5 (LA1)

That is second LA-weightlifting Chinese gold lost in a row.

This is quite obvious that 1984 boycott helped China a lot to shine on olympic stage for the first time.

Anyway, Naim Suleimanov aka Suleymanoglu would get his first olympic gold here, this one for Bulgaria.

Day 3 events

Gymnastics Artistic - Men's Team

1. United States 591.400 (LA1)

2. China 590.800 (LA2)

3. Soviet Union 590.300 (FR1)

That was close final to say the least. 3 teams within 1.1 pts at the end.

But I don't know whether simply comparing LA and Friendships results are reliable.

I think it's not so easy to compare results from different competiton - different set of judges etc.

@thiago_simoes i am very interested in your opinion here, if you'd like to pay attention to this little thread

Shooting - Men's 50m Running Target

1. Igor Sokolov URS 592 (FR1)

2. Tibor Bodnar HUN 591 (FR2)

3. Thomas Pfeiffer GDR 590 (FR3)

This is already 3rd Chinese LA gold lost here. 2 golds in weightlifting in the first 2 days, and now this one.

And another event I miss a lot in today's olympics event schedule.

Shooting - Mixed Trap

1. Alexandr Asanov URS 199 (FR1)

2. Jorg Damme GDR 194 (FR2)

3. Josef Machan TCH 194 (FR3)

In LA it was mixed event, in FR it was men's only.

Italy has sadly lost its LA gold here. No medal for Peru, either.

Shooting - Women's 10m Air Rifle

1. Pat Spurgin USA 393 (LA1)

2. Edith Gufler ITA 391 (LA2)

3. Svetlana Komaristova URS 390 (FR1)

Swimming - Men's 100m Freestyle

1. Rowdy Gaines USA 49.80 (LA1)

2. Mark Stockwell AUS 50.24 (LA2)

3. Sergey Smiriagin URS 50.26 (FR1)

Swimming - Men's 200m Backstroke

1. Sergei Zabolotnov URS 1.58.41 (FR1) WR

2. Vladimir Shemetov URS 1.59.54 (FR2)

3. Rick Carey USA 2.00.23 (LA1)

Swimming - Women's 400m Freestyle

1. Tiffany Cohen USA 4.07.10 (LA1)

2. Astrid Strauss GDR 4.07.66 (FR1)

3. Irina Laricheva URS 4.09.70 (FR2)

Swimming - Women's 4x100m Freestyle Relay

1. East Germany 3.42.41 (FR1) WR

2. United States 3.43.43 (LA1)

3. Soviet Union 3.44.31 (FR2)

NED has lost its silver here, 4th 0.09 sec behind Soviets.

Swimming seems to be easy to compare, but in the real world i think NED might have been able to swim this 0.1 sec faster if they had fought USSR in the same race.

Swimming - Women's 100m Backstroke

1. Ina Kleber GDR 1.00.99 (FR1)

2. Kristin Otto GDR 1.02.02 (FR2)

3. Theresa Andrews USA 1.02.55 (LA1)

And another medal for Kristin Otto in LA.

I wonder if all the Friendship Games medalists would pass the doping tests in LA...

Weightlifting - Men's 60kg (Featherweight)

1. Stefan Topurov BUL 322.5 (FR1)

2. Yurik Sarkisyan URS 315 (FR2)

3. Anton Kodzabashev BUL 295 (FR3)

Third BUL weightlifting gold in a row in LA.

Third CHN weightlifting gold lost in a row in LA.

Four CHN gold medals lost in LA within first 3 days.

No gold for CHN in LA in our simulation yet.

So I've been ill with the flu for the last couple of weeks and I've had a lot of spare time on my hands.

So I thought I'd compare the sprint athletics by putting them through a program which equalizes the wind speeds between the two races.

This is what it should have looked like if there had been no wind at at all at either LA or Moscow in 1984

Thanks @Dragon

it is very interesting.

I wonder how it looks in W 100m when you use your magic program :-)

As English Wikipedia says:

Making such comparisons was unjustified, because of differing conditions and equipment. For example, Marlies Göhr's result of 10.95 in women's 100 metre run was slightly better than Evelyn Ashford's winning time of 10.97 at the 1984 Olympics, but when the two met head-to-head a week after the Friendship Games, Ashford was much faster than Göhr and set the new world record.

that's what I thought.

I think there's a big chance Ashford would have won against Goehr in LA in 100m race,  when they would have been running together.
