Brits in Winter action

Grassmarket

Recommended Posts

First two Brits in World Cup action today in the Freeski Big Air in Chur, :SUI. Qualifiers this morning, finals this evening.  Unfortunately we are geo-blocked for the livestream…..

Chris McGregor in the Men’s & Kirsty Muir in the Women.  Both have chances of making the Final, don’t want to put the Commentators’ Curse on them.

Chris didn’t make it through. Kirsty in action now, but has already got a good run down.

Safely through in Fourth.

Updates on GBR in skeleton and bobsleigh

In bobsleigh, Brad Hall has got off to a decent start to the season by finishing 2nd in the 2 man event then winning the 4 man race North American Cup races in Whistler . Small fields but the US, Canadians and Swiss were represented by strong crews.

In skeleton Jacob Salisbury and Craig Thompson have both had a 3rd and a 6th in the 2 Inter-Continental Cup (2nd tier) races in Norway. Amelia Coltman had 2 6ths in the women's races

Oh dear, Charlie DNF.  But there’s a god result coming.

Scottish men continue to dominate - now up to 7-0 and certain to qualify for the Semis.  Women are 3-4 - safe from relegation but will need a whole lot of luck to qualify.

    • need to work on the celebrations... or just drop them?   Btw, these jerseys suck and I remember Zambia playing in all white with red numbers. At least they have orange on national flag but still...
    • British Columbia in general and Vancouver in particular are awesome and it’s great more people got to discover it thanks to Vancouver 2010.
    • And of course the British being famous for curmudgeons, there were always plenty of curmudgeons to quote.  Then of course from the opening ceremony and the cycle race on the very first morning it was obviously going to be triumph, so everyone just shut up for a while.
    • Yep, the amount of emergency services I heard at some point was a little extreme (for our little town), so I checked what was going on and saw they were all being called to a specific location. Until then I thought maybe it was part of a parade of trucks and agricultural vehicles that was on it's way from the next town over, decorated with lights and stuff.   Since I knew it was on the parade route, I was sure one of those big vehicles had hit people somehow (there were, besides the many vehicles, also two helicopters on the way, meaning it certainly wasn't about a single victim).   We picked our bikes and went to take a look, absolutely chaos in the area. Never saw so many services combined together, fire trucks from 20km away, ambulance after ambulance came racing by, people frantically trying to make way for them (the roads weren't really closed yet).   While there we heard someone who had been close say that the parade hadn't arrived yet and what seemed to have happened was that a car from the other side came onto the roundabout and simply never turned. "It's a massive drama over there, unbelievable", he said.   Quite quickly rumours started spreading of course, the first one turned out to be true: a middle aged (local) woman was behind the wheel and seems to have become unwell. Local security camera showed the car going at high speed right before the roundabout.   Plenty of rumours going around in terms of who were involved of course, and people keeping each other up to date to see if they know this or that family and such...   Never expected my little town to be big news in the Netherlands, even including some breaking broadcasts, live reporters and everything, damn. By far the biggest thing to happen here in my memory

    • For me, these were very good Olympics, and British sport benefited greatly from them, and is still benefiting. I fear it will be much worse here. Canada also benefited very good on Vancouver 2010 – this is very good see in the medal standings of subsequent Winter Games after 2010 and earlier.
    • Nobody hates Britain more than the British media so… I recall it being quite a pessimistic tone before the London games started.
    • I'm curious what was written before London 2012? Did they attack their own country, or did they just keep quiet?

    • Very true point.  Although I think at this point everyone is just holding their collective breath until the test event.  The NHL isn't going to rage anymore until then because it's not like that would make the arena progress go any quicker
