Former Dutch international and Glasgow Rangers icon Fernando Ricksen has died today, aged 43. He had been suffering from ALS/motor neurone disease for over six years and in the end he couldn't do more than communicate via a speech computer. In 2013 on a Dutch talk show he was there to present his book, the host noticed he was talking considerably slower than usual so asked about it, and Ricksen there announced he had been diagnosed with it.

If bombed out and starving Yemen is beating you 10-1 then your country shouldn’t be playing soccer. Bhutan’s best bets for sporting success are Taekwondo, Shooting, and Archery

So every young Bhutanese boy who specifically wants to play football should give up their dreams because Bhutan's best bets are in other sports? That sounds pretty North Korean.

No, They just need to find away to get a better program off the ground. I know Bhutan isn’t rich, but it’s a highly peaceful and rather prosperous country in many aspects.

Well you quite literally said "then your country shouldn't be playing", so I thought you meant they shouldn't be playing :p

Of course they're trying their best, no doubt. It's still a tiny nation though, it's impressive they can field a full U16 team. Yemen is in all kinds of terrible situations, yes, but they've got 30 times as many people, no wonder they can field a better team (especially in football, which is pretty much known as a sport poor people can easily* play since you really don't need much for it - a ball and whichever random things can function as goal posts).

*relatively of course, compared to many other sports

    • Yes, but what I mean for Serbia is that everything changed there (unfortunately for us ). 2022 was an unbelievable mess, that's not the case anymore now with just one athlete who has really gone for it and made it, so I'm 99% sure they'll accept it this time.   Who knows though. Plus there's always 1-2 bigger countries here or there who reject something, but it's not gonna be 16 places I'm afraid
    • Doping by Event Type When we look at which events have the most doping cases, a few categories stand out from recent sanction records: Long Distance (3,000m and above): 32% of cases Sprints (400m or less): 24% of cases Jumps: 12% of cases Javelin: 8% of cases Middle Distance (800m–1,500m): 8% of cases Hammer: 8% of cases Steeplechase (3,000m SC): 4% of cases
    • From 2020 to 2025    These three countries alone make up almost two-thirds (61.9%) of all current doping violations in athletics worldwide. It’s worth noting that 199 of World Athletics’ 214 member federations have no athletes on the current ban list. This means the problem is really concentrated in a small number of places. Here’s a look at the top countries: Rank Country Total Violations Percentage Region 1 Kenya 119 24.74% Africa 2 India 108 22.45% Asia 3 Russia 73 15.18% Europe 4 China 26 5.40% Asia 5 Turkey 20 4.16% Europe 6 Italy 18 3.74% Europe 7 South Africa 18 3.74% Africa 8 Ukraine 17 3.53% Europe 9 United States 16 3.33% North America 10 Morocco 15 3.12% Africa
