BIG AIR SHOUGANG

Capacity: TBD

The Big Air Shougang is a outdoor facility built specially for the upcoming Winter Olympics Games. It will be the only snow sport in Beijing. The stadium is located in the southern district of Shijingshan in the Chinese capital.

 

The venue will host the attractive Big Air competitions in Snowboarding and very first Freestyle Skiing Big Air competition in history under the five rings.

 

The stadium built in an interesting location near of older steel mill was opened in 2019 and will be the first permanent Big Air stadium in the world.

NATIONAL XIAOHAITUO ALPINE SKIING CENTRE

Capacity: 15 000

The National Xiaohaituo Alpine Skiing Centre is a modern ski resort located in the northwest part of Yanqing, suburban district of Beijing, 70km from the capital at an altitude of 2198m.

 

The venue will host the Alpine Skiing Competitions during the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. The centre offer 7 ski slopes, each stretching for about 10 kilometres, with the largest vertical drop reaching 900 meters. According experts the course will feature one of the steepest race courses in the world, with sections up to 68 degrees.

 

During the Olympics 11 medal events will be contested in this sport of Alpine Skiing, M & W Downhill, Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super Giant Slalom (Super-G), Alpine Combined (Combined Downhill + 1 Combined Slalom run) and for the second time at the Olympics also the Mixed (Parallel Slalom) Team Event.

NATIONAL SLIDING CENTRE

Capacity: 10 000 (2000 seating)

The National Sliding Centre is located in the Yanqing district, 70km northwest of Beijing. Just a kilometer from the Olympic Village. The new build venue will host all sliding events during the Beijing 2022 winter games. It is one of the biggest constructions provided for the upcoming olympics. The construction of the venue however used local terrain as much as possible, minimizing environmental impacts, reducing cut and fill, and saving investments according to the organizing committee.

 

Now It is the first of its kind in the world to span 360 degrees, Chinese media has claimed. The Track is due cover an area of 125,937 square metres with a vertical drop of 127 meters. It will be 1.9 kilometres long with 16 angled curves and will feature a full circle spanning Yanqing District's Xiaohaituo Mountain's ridges to resemble the shape of a mythical Chinese dragon.

 

The facility is the very first winter Sports Sliding venue in the country. Eight international ice makers from Russia, France, Canada and other countries and regions participated in the creation of the ice, along with 20 domestic workers. The National Sliding Center became also the first competition venue of Beijing 2022 where the host country national team was allowed to train.

 

3 Different sports will be contested in this venue in front of an expected capacity of 2000 seating places and another  8000 standing along the course, The competition in the sliding centre will start as was the custom at the previous winter games with Luge events (M & W Singles, M Doubles and Mixed Relay) then followed by Skeleton (M & W Singles) and completed by Bobsleigh events (M & W Two-Man, M Four-Man and historic debut of W Monobob).

NATIONAL BIATHLON CENTRE

The National Biathlon Centre is located in Chongli District, Zhangjiakou city, Hebei Province 180km north from Beijing. This Zhangjiakou cluster will host the biathlon, Nordic skiing, ski jumping and Nordic combined events for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The cluster will have its own Olympic Village and own Medal Plazza.

 

The modern Biathlon stadium arranged with a classic 30 shooting range a 250m penalty loop and a quite demanding course with the possibility to adjust the distance of the track as needed with shorter loops (4km, 3.3km, 3km, 2.5km and 2km) for different competitons, the lowest point of the course 1.657m and highest point of the track at 1.720m. The expected capacity of 6000 seating places should welcome Biathlon fans during the races.

 

The Kuyangshu Nordic and Biathlon Center, which is another name of the venue will host 11 Biathlon events, (the M 10km & W 7.5km Sprint, M 12.5km & W 10 km Pursuit, M 20km & W 15km Individual, M 15km & W 12.5km Mass Start, M 4x7.5km & W 4x6km Team Relay and the 4x6km Mixed Relay).

NATIONAL KUYANGSHU SKI JUMPING CENTRE

The National Kuyangshu Ski Jumping Centre is a part of the National Biathlon and Nordic Sports Centre complex located in Chongli District in Zhangjiakou city 180km north of Beijing. Zhangjiakou was already quite famous as winter sports destination with a number of ski ressorts. Nevertheless, for the Winter Games almost all sports venues had to be built from scratch.


One of them was also the Nordic Winter Sports Centre. It was constructed near the Kuyangshu village, and included a ski jumping facility. The costs of the Olympic ski jumping hills were originally estimated at more than 60 million US dollars. The architectural design of the ski jumps is resembling to a Ruyi scepter, a Chinese talisman, which is why the facility is being called "Snow Ruyi". At the jump head there a 40 meter high, circular viewing platform with a diameter of 80 meters that include a panoramic restaurant.


Construction phase of the ski jumping venue started in 2017 and was supposed to be completed already in 2019. However, was officially opened on December 21, 2020. After the Games, the ski jumping facility shall serve as a national training centre, potentially also including to be built junior hills.

 

The Facility is composed of 2 Olympic Ski Jumping Hills, a

Large Hill with Hill Size 140m and K-Point 120m (136.2m total highth and 105.21 In-run length, Take-off length 6.98m and Take-Off Heigth 3.13m, expected average speed 94.64 Km/h.).

and a Normal Hill with Hill size 106m and K-Point 95m (114.7 total Height and 100m In-Run length, Take-Off length 6.5m and Take-Off Height 2.37m, expected average speed 90.79 Km/h.)

 

The centre will host obviously all Ski Jumping competitions of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. 5 Ski Jumping Events (M & W Normal Hill Individual, M Large Hill Individual, M LH Team Competition and very first Olympic Mixed Team Normal Hill Event). The venue will also serve as host of opening stage of all 3 Nordic Combined competitions, the Ski Jumping Part of the M Individual Normal Hill Gundersen, Individual Large Hill Gundersen and Team Large Hill Gundersen events.

    • I think the reason is that it's generally preferable to have a fast shooter in the 1st leg, and especially in the prone shooting, where Hofer is quite slow.   Now, I'm not saying I agree with the choice, because I don't. I think it's going to neutralize Giacomel's skiing skills in the 1st lap at least.   I guess the idea is to try and set a very fast pace in the 1st leg, which is usually quite tactical, but I'm afraid that's going to force Giacomel to risk too much because he will feel he has to make some time somehow.   Regardless, Italy must be on the podium tomorrow. I think that would be crucial for the following races as well. I think France is the clear favorite, but the other teams are not stronger than Italy on paper.
