:USA US Olympic Trials: Day 2

Finals:

Men's 400m Individual Medley (OQT: 4:12.50):

1. Carson Foster - 4:07.64 Q

2. Chase Kalisz - 4:09.39 Q?

3. Jay Litherland - 4:12.34

4. Ian Grum - 4:15.06

5. Tommy Bried - 4:15.15

6. Kyle Ponsler - 4:16.53

7. Gregg Enoch - 4:17.64

8. Danny Berlitz - 4:17.65

Carson Foster gets redemption from his 3rd place finish 3 years ago. Really happy for the guy. He was clearly really emotional about it after the race. Chase Kalisz will also likely be headed to his 3rd Olympics.

Women's 100m Butterfly (OQT: 57.62)

1. Gretchen Walsh - 55.31 Q

2. Torri Huske - 55.52 Q?

3. Regan Smith - 55.62

4. Claire Curzan - 57.47

5. Kelly Pash - 57.72

6. Beata Nelson - 57.80

7. Lillie Nordmann - 57.92

8. Emma Sticklen - 58.44

Insanely fast times. With this race, we had Gretchen Walsh swimming the 2nd fastest performance of all time and Torri Huske and Regan Smith becoming the 3rd and 4th fastest performers of all time. Walsh and Huske will enter Paris as the favorites for gold and silver.

Men's 100m Breaststroke (OQT: 59.49)

1. Nic Fink - 59.08 Q

2. Charlie Swanson - 59.16 Q?

3. Josh Matheny - 59.23

4. Liam Bell - 59.40

5. Noah Nichols - 59.69

6. Jake Foster - 59.84

7. Luke Rodarte - 59.85

8. Michael Andrew - 1:00.11

There were some doubts about him qualifying yesterday but Nic Fink delivered his best race of trials tonight to qualify in 1st for his 2nd Olympic Team. Charlie Swanson also continued his good form to likely qualify for his first Olympic Team.

Semi-finals:

Advancing to Men's 200m Freestyle Final:

1. Kieran Smith - 1:45.39

2. Luke Hobson - 1:45.58

3. Drew Kibler - 1:45.82

4. Jake Mitchell - 1:46.43

5. Blake Pieroni - 1:46.52

6. Brooks Curry - 1:46.60

7. Chris Guiliano - 1:46.83

8. Aaron Shackell - 1:46.95 (Won swimoff)

Advancing to Women's 100m Breaststroke Final:

1. Lilly King - 1:05.57

2. Kaitlyn Dobler - 1:06.42

3. Emma Weber - 1:06.48

4. Lydia Jacoby - 1:06.66

5. Kaelyn Gridley - 1:06.67

6. Alex Walsh - 1:06.87

7. Ella Nelson - 1:07.41

8. McKenzie Siroky - 1:07.73

Should be an easy qualification for King. Lots of people thought Jacoby would be a lock for the 2nd spot but it looks like that won't quite be the case here. McKenzie Siroky qualifying for the final is pretty impressive since she's an ice hockey player and only started to swim full time recently. Also the 46 year old Gabrielle Rose placed 10th in a new PB of 1:08.32

Advancing to Men's 100m Backstroke Final:

1. Ryan Murphy - 52.65

2. Adam Chaney - 53.08

3. Jack Aikins - 53.23

4. Hunter Armstrong - 53.57

5. Tommy Janton - 53.61

6. Jack Wilkening - 53.70

7. Justin Ress - 53.78

8. Will Modglin - 53.83

A heart stopping moment happened in the 2nd semifinal where Hunter Armstrong slipped off the starting blocks and was way behind. However, he managed to still finish 2nd and qualify. Assuming there aren't any issues in the final, he and Murphy should have no trouble qualifying.

Advancing to Women's 200m Freestyle Final:

1. Katie Ledecky - 1:55.25

2. Claire Weinstein - 1:55.86

3. Paige Madden - 1:56.36

4. Erin Gemmell - 1:56.53

5. Katie Grimes - 1:57.19

6. Alex Shackell - 1:57.42

7. Anna Peplowski - 1:57.55

8. Simone Manuel - 1:57.63

You will notice relay regular Bella Sims not listed. That's because she finished 17th in prelims and failed to qualify for the semifinals. This was after a disastrous 400m freestyle performance yesterday. Unfortunately, it looks like her chances of making the Olympic Team are basically over.

Qualifiers after Day 2 (10 athletes):

Priority 1: 1st place winners (5 swimmers)

  • Nic Fink - M 100m Breaststroke, M 4x100m Medley Relay
  • Carson Foster - M 400m Individual Medley

  • Aaron Shackell - M 400m Freestyle

*Not guaranteed selection - Need 6 doubles per gender

  • Paige Madden - W 400m Freestyle
  • Kieran Smith - M 400m Freestyle
  • Charlie Swanson - M 100m Breaststroke, M 4x100m Medley Relay

*Not guaranteed selection - Need 10 doubles per gender

@Topicmaster1010 I don’t disagree with you about them being the top two favourites in the women’s 100m butterfly,  but for silver there’s a bunch of names really close to Huske. Yufei, MacNeil, Kohler, and McKeon (didn’t have the best of Trials, but I can never count her out) will also be in the mix for the minor medals.

McKeon's shoulders are playing up so you can count her out.

What exactly is it?

Revealed during trials that her preparation has been undermined by shoulder pain. I don't think the problem has gone away so I wouldn't expect too much improvement from her.

Might be in the minority here, but I don’t get the MA hate. Seems like a nice dude.

It's more so his parents that I dislike for controlling his life and ruining his swimming career (his dad is his coach).

The 100m breaststroke result is satisfying since his dad thinks his training style is superior to that of other coaches.
