Sailing Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

US Olympic Team Trials

The US Olympic selection regatta across 5 events took place in Miami last week.

Athletes Confirmed as Selected for Team USA:

Women's iQFOiL - Dominique Stater - Stater confirmed in the quota that she secured in taking silver at last year's Pan-American games

Men's 49er - Ian Barrows & Hans Henken - The US quota was won by Andrew Mollerus and Ian MacDiarmid when they finished 5th at the World Champs with Barrows and Henken finishing in 9th. At the selection trials, Barrows and Henken won the event by 3 points.

Other Event Winners:

Mixed 470 - Stu McNay & Lara Dallman-Weiss

Men's iQFOiL - Noah Lyons

Men's Kite - Markus Edegran

For these 3 boats, USA do not currently have a quota so these athletes need to secure their tickets to Paris via the 470 World Champs or the last chance regatta.

:ITA have officially selected the first 2 Olympic crews

women's ILCA 6: Chiara Benini Floriani

despite the quota place was won by Carolina Albano, the 3rd place in last year's pre-Olympic Regatta in Marseille and the 18th place at the recent world champs in Argentina gave Benini Floriani the edge over Albano, who finished in a miserable 40th place at the world champs

women's 49er FX: Jana Germani & Giorgia Bertuzzi

this was never in doubt, they definitely are our best crew in this class (despite having a bad week at last year's world champs, they won gold and silver at the last 2 European champs and performed well in many other international regattas)

:BRA will refuse both ILCA quotas achieved by Gabriela Kidd and Bruno Fontes for not meeting the technical criteria (top 16 in Worlds in the Olympic cycle).

The Nacra17 team is also at risk, despite placing 17th at the 2022 Worlds. They will have one last chance at the coming Princesa Sofia regatta.

A couple of :AUS squad announcements confirmed over the weekend:

Defending champion Matt Wearn has been selected for the ILCA7 class whilst Grae Morris has been selected for the Men's iQFOiL after a strong showing in recent World Championship.

They join Breiana Whitehead who was selected for the Women's Kite late last year.

    • It's waaaay too expensive & inconvenient. Basically WOG minus the bobsleigh track & indoor arena for figure skating/hockey(which is the easy part of Olympic bid). Just won't happen anytime soon. Winter sports are too facility dependant and the entire alpine skiing requires a separate venue.

    • Also a first: never before has a Dutch pair participated in the games, according to media rapports.
    • The Technical director of the Dutch Olympic Committee has, using his discretionary powers, decided to include them in the team. He cites “extra-ordinary circumstances”, but has not stated what they are. The use of these powers is quite rare. They were used in 2022 to nominate an alpine-skier.
