It should be pointed out the European Championships have yet to announce a host for 2026, with both athletics and aquatics off the program at the moment. Gymnastics is 50/50 with the federation still keeping an open mind to the European Games. Cycling is presumably still onboard, but they’ve also been a constant at the European Games in some form. Both multi-sport events are currently without a future host. Both are facing sports being flakey about joining, and a public confused as the the concept. The next few years should be very interesting.

By the way, I found it highly amusing when people were discussing esports at multi-sport games this morning because just literal hours earlier, I had finished writing on article on that very topic. However, they also can’t get sports to remain on the program. Plus, they’ve almost already reached critical mass in terms of athletes with around a dozen sports. The whole event still has a bit of a confused feel as well.

It being a newer event maybe hurts it a little as well. It doesn’t quite have the prestige of the Pan American Games, Asian Games, or even Commonwealth Games.

I just can’t believe how empty many of the venues have been. I get this event isn’t a big deal in Europe, but you’d think the curiosity aspect would at least get some people to turnout. I’ve heard local promotion was terrible though. It’s a real shame because this event clearly has strong foundations. It attracted some top athletes. The EOC landed a great television/streaming deal with the EBU. The venues seem apt enough to host an event of this magnitude. It’s early days, but it seems like the legacy of this event might be empty stands and technical gremlins Still, I’m enjoying the competitions at least.

I hoped they might go further after the brilliant fight they put up against yesterday. Oh well, still happy them participate and even win a match.
