Canoeing and sailing at least have the ability to be shrunk (and in canoeing's case able to drop slalom). Modern pentathlon can't shrink without disappearing.

Not sure, the IIHF essentially removed them and re-juggled Division 1. They also have to decide on how to handled the withdrawn teams in the lower divisions. The fairest thing would probably be to reintroduce them in Division 1A and for the withdrawn teams back to their old divisions, but Russia does have a lot of clout. We could see a scenario where 18 teams compete at the world champs and then either four get relegated or two get relegated, but none get promoted.

Interesting, I always thought that if Russia stopped the invasion before the end of 2022 (probably more hopeful than realistic), they would be brought back for the 2023 sporting season in which case this decision would be a bit premature. If the other summer sports follow through with the same plan then it'll have a lot of implications for qualification to the 2024 Olympics.
