Neise came out of nowhere to win gold. If you made a list of the ten most likely people to win this contest she likely wouldn't be on it. Even accounting for those two medals Germany is ahead of where you'd expect them to be based on world cup performances. In luge, even though Germany was favoured to win all the races was at least a minor surprise that Germany managed to win all of them and Germany was just not the favourite in either skeleton event.

What an upset for Neise. Truly nothing can go wrong for the Germans on this track. This feels like those world championships that are held in Germany where the Germans are entirely unbeatable.

The easiest gold medal for China to win across all sports, on paper, was the aerials team event and they managed to mess it up so ya know. I don't have a lot of faith, which I'm sad about because I'd actually like Xu Mengtao to finally get a gold medal.

People keep assuming that and I don't know why. China has an ability to fail to win aerials at the Olympics that is so baffling you have to wonder if there is some sort of curse.

I wouldn't even be surprised at this point. Canada is having horrible, horrible Olympics so far. Honestly I think Canada might end up with as few as three gold medals at this rate.

Edit: ya, so we haven't won a gold medal in five days and looking at the schedule the next event where Canada is either the outright favourite or a co-favourite to win gold is the 15th (men's snowboard big air, men's ski slopestyle, women's team pursuit), meaning we'll probably go at least a full week without winning gold. Brutal.

Weirdly in real time I thought it was a false start but I can't see it at all in slowmo. It's really not a surprise, Canadians who are favourites rarely win at the Olympics.
