What a World Cup win for young Annamarija Lampic :SLO at the classic sprint in Pyeongchang, she destroyed everyone

Kowalczyk has managed to make her style even uglier again and finished 4th, a few seconds away from her first win since the Olympics :p

I'd take that with a pinch of salt seeing that someone like Alisa Zhambalova made the final. Her only other WC top 30 in sprint came at the limited field of Tour de Ski. :p

Also an Australian scored WC points. :d

Sure, all top Scandinavians (among others) are at home preparing for Lahti :p

But still, there were some decent names there and Lampic just destroyed them. It might give her the confidence for the real breakthrough (which is already coming this season because she's doing really well :d ).

Lampic & Retivykh notch first World Cup wins in PyeongChang

C3vOANtUYAENIZE.jpg

It was a day of firsts in PyeongChang, Korea the site of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.   Day's sprint competitions marked the first time that South Korea has ever hosted an FIS Cross-Country World Cup event.  Along with that first we had 4 of the 6 athlete who made it to the podium today there for the first time.  As well the two winners, Anamarija Lampic of Slovenia and Gleb Retivykh of Russian were first time winners.

Lampic went head to head with Poland's Justyna Kowalczyk on the final climb and was able to create a gap and held it all the way to the finish.  Silje Oeyre Slind of Norway was able to fight her way to second +1.60 behind just ahead of the USA's Ida Sargent +1.79 off the lead.  For all three it was their first World Cup podiums.  Kowalczyk crossed the line in 4th +2.35 back.

In the men's competition Retivykh came from second place on the final curve to overtake Norway's Sondre Turvoll Fossli to win his first World Cup by +0.30.  In third place was Russian Andrey Parfenov +0.73 back.  It was his second World Cup sprint podium following another third place finish in Rybinsk 2015.  He took third just 0.01 ahead of Canada's Lenny Valjas.

It was the first time any of these athletes competed on this sprint course which featured a long early climb followed by a very large second climb similar in height to the final hill of the Ruka sprint course.  The course is being tested as a possible option for next winter's Olympic Games.

Competitions continue tomorrow with the Skiathlon.  Ladies' will complete a 7.5 km + 7.5 km course and the men will go 15 km + 15 km .

Races in places like Bosnia, Serbia and so on are also perfect examples of how incredibly important it is to choose your races wisely...Bruna very nearly beat Ilic on the 5k free earlier this week, which would have gotten her like 155 points here instead of 319.

    • Apparently this season will be last one in Kamil Stoch career if his results wont be enough good for his standards.
    • Such a nice one for Colturi ! That was fun. It almost looked like a script with the cameras focusing on Colturi a couple of times before her first run and showcasing the potential of youngster and she didn't disappoint.      I hope Colturi skis for Albania forever. So much fun to cheer her with the Albanian flag.    I don't get it why everyone is being so critical of Colturi, you got no right to criticize a personal decision, as most European nations use imported athletes in many sports like wrestling and cheer them on like their.   Would you spend hours criticizing Frank Chamizo for switching to Italy rather than playing for Cuba?

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
