[OFF TOPIC] Politics Thread

Joko Widodo officially began his second term as President of Indonesia by appointing ministers to his cabinet this week. For Minister of Defense we have.... the other presidential candidate who has been trying to topple him for years. Almost all of the opposition party get sucked in to the governing coalition except one party.

The hardcore fanboys of both sides now confused. How come these sworn enemies unite in one government?

What I had also noticed in some of last presidential elections is that president/vice president duo candidates were consisted of persons belonging (one of two) to suharto era, and the other to pro-sukarno camp (concerning their political background). It's difficult to be determined in Indonesia what kind of ideology serves any candidacy or government

Yeah Widodo was viewed as the reformer, the one to make politics leaving Sukarno-Suharto rivalry stuff, but in the end his overlord pulled the leash and drive him back to follow the old ways.

The amount of countries having major protests right now is kind of crazy. I’m getting some Arab Spring vibes again. Although I’d say this is more of a South America Bonfire.

This is the entitlement era. People feel like the world owns them something when in fact it owns them nothing. South American politics is a corrupt tire fire for ages though. This won't change anytime soon.

I wouldn’t call it the entitlement era. The Elite have only gotten richer since WW2, and the common person has really improved their economic status (especially in developing countries). Capitalism is spinning out of control and people are finally realizing that. All the protestors want is decent pay, a stable government, and a less corrupt government. I don’t feel like that’s too much to ask.

What is there to look for though? If capitalism ain't getting it done, shall we go back to communism? Actually most of the South American countries are run by sociallists already and that doesn't seem to work either. Politics & corrpution go hand in hand since power & greed are two of the oldest traits in human character for centuries. You're asking for the impossible IMO.

No, we shouldn’t try Capitalism or Communism. We should try the middle ground (I.e Democratic Socialism). Those in power in South American have socialism to satisfy their own greed. They do not deserve to be called socialists, they are autocrats.

I totally get your point about politics and corruption. I’m glad to have someone like you around. Most of the time we don’t see eye to eye on policies, but it’s clear that we both care. If more people cared the world would be better. I blame a lack of education, General laziness, and a submissive will for the reason the world hasn’t changed for the better despite al the progress humans have made. I am asking the impossible, but really every person should strive for the impossible. Those that do are generally the best, most wise people.

The best, most wise people are generally those who don't put themselves in the group of best, most wise people :p

Of for sure I’m not the best person, not anywhere near. However, I think striving to be at least makes me better than quite a few who don’t even try.

I’m an annoying a-hole with a terrible temperament, and no real discernible talent, but I do try to be a best human I can be everyday (and that ought to be worth something).
