Had a very strange career.  Was really considered a decent but second rank player prior to 1990.  Became a global superstar in 1990. After 1990........went back to being a decent but second rank player again.

2016 U20 world champion (800m) Kipyegon Bett :KEN, bronze at te 2017 senior world championships, has died yesterday after a month of illness.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kipyegon_Bett

Massive talent in 2015-2017 or so, got caught for EPO and never really competed anymore outside of Kenya after that.

One of the legends of Dutch football from the 70's, Johan Neeskens, has passed away aged 73. His most famous moment by far was in the World Cup final against West Germany, when in the 2nd minute he made 1-0 from a penalty in his characteristic way: indescribably hard through the middle.

Another young Kenyan athlete, who passes away in recent years. Sad for this country.

British Shot Putter Geoff Capes.  Was most active in the 70s and 80s, when shot putting was in a very drug-enhanced era, so never won the big prizes, but was pretty much a national hero in Britain from his appearances in reality tv shows as well as his athletics career.

:BRA Football player Zé Carlos. He played a single match for Brazil, but it wasn't a small one: his only international match for Brazil was the 1998 World Cup semi against the Netherlands (because of Cafu being suspended).

He was playing Brazilian Série C a year before the World Cup and then disappeard again. I think he is the most obscure player to play a world cup game for Brazil.

Nice story.

    • What are the odds WTA/ITF has Kostyuk vs Potapova AO R1 just to see if the hand shake happens?
    • Malinin  opted for the 4-Axel in his Short Program, but faltered, landing him in 3rd thus far (and only 0.05 away from 4th!).  Surely he has the tools to rise back up in the Free Program.  (Also, perhaps this will serve to show him that he is in fact beatable.)
    • I think they incorrectly translated Ukrainian word "nahorody" - it is not a full synonym of "medal". Its cocrrect translation is "award". Meanwhile russian tennis playes switched for Potapova ->  Rakhimova ->
    • Ukrainian diver Lyskun switches allegiance to Russia, loses all medals | Olympics News | Al Jazeera   'loses all medals'   I would assume Al Jazeera could have been a bit clearer and mention this would presumably only be national medals. I mean, it's not like the Ukrainian federation, or any single federation for that matter, has the power to strip her of her world and European championships medals I hope (not for her sake, but because that would be a super weird precedent)
    • That's what I'd plan as well (except for MelFest), but I also know I am hypocritical enough to still want to watch the show and have a fun evening
    • Confirmation about the broadcasting rights.   If I'm reading it right, for most of Europe it will now be exclusive to Discovery/Eurosport or whatever brand they use.     For outside Europe, it's on YouTube. For Planet VPN....well, let us know if you find out.   fil-taker-list-25-26-winterberg-1.pdf   Also, should have mentioned above that the Nations Cup races today are just over one leg, whereas there are two runs in each of the World Cup races.
    • Got our first competition of the season coming up in Solitude, Utah  this weekend.  Live on Discovery Plus etc, plus also YouTube and the Olympic Channel.  If you are new to the sport, the sprint races on Saturday will be the format you'll find easy to understand.     ISMF   ISMF Skimo - YouTube
    • Surely. Her first coach now works in russia (and grandma lives in russia according to Sereda). They were in contact and despite of full funding from  the girl decided to become the star of russian propaganda.  As I saw in X: "It took the Russians four years of war to find a relatively well-known sports personality to carry out such a propaganda operation."
