because their opponents inherited the advantage by beating the higher seed...

 

so, actually it's not always the lower bib, but the skier filling the space of the supposed lower bib at the start of the knockout stage (if the no.16 beats the no., then it's like he gets the no.1 for the rest of the event, for instance)...
