To Ornskoldsvik & Umea

Swedish host cities for 2019 IIHF Under 18 Worlds named

The host cities of the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship in Sweden are known. Ornskoldsvik and Umea were named as Sweden’s cities for the event that will take place one year after next spring’s U18 Worlds in Chelyabinsk and Magnitogorsk, Russia.

Both cities are located in the northern part of Sweden and are not far apart from each other as they can be reached within one hour by a new railway line or by car along the Baltic Sea. The proposed tournament dates are 18 to 28 April 2019. The teams, groups and schedule will be known next year.

The event will be hosted by the Swedish Ice Hockey Association in co-operation with its branches of the provinces of Angermanland and Vasterbotten, the host cities and the two local clubs MODO Ornskoldsvik and Bjorkloven Umea.

Ornskoldsvik is a classic hockey town in Sweden and even though MODO suffered relegation to the second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan in 2016, the club remains well-respected as a talent producer. Peter Forsberg, Markus Naslund, the Sedin twins Daniel and Henrik, Anders Hedberg and Victor Hedman are among the famous hockey players who came from the city of 29,000 inhabitants. The Fjallraven Center offers a capacity for 7,350 spectators.

Umea was already the secondary venue (with Skelleftea) when Sweden hosted the 2000 IIHF World Junior Championship in the north of the country. About 600 kilometres north of Stockholm and 400 kilometres away from the Arctic Circle, Umea is the biggest city in northern Sweden with almost 85,000 inhabitants within the city and over 120,000 in the municipality.

The local club Bjorkloven Umea had appearances in the top Swedish league but had tough years recently including bankruptcy. Since 2013 it is back in the second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan. The club plays in the 5,450-capacity T3 Center.

Sweden previously hosted the U18 Worlds once, in 2006 in Angelholm and Halmstad. Since the U18 category got its global event in 1999, Sweden has won five silver medals – most recently in 2016 – and three bronze medals.

  • 3 weeks later...

From tomorrow will start the first seasons international break, in other words we will have the possibilities to follow the first pre-olympic tests.

Basically all participants will show up this weekend. From tomorrow will start the new season of the popular and prestigious Euro-Hockey Tour

Traditionally the first stage is the Karjala Cup in Finland (followed in December by the One Channel Cup (Former Izvestia Trophy) in Russia, then the Czech Hockey Games and the Swedes Hockey Games this time played in April before the world championships because of the Olympic games played in it´s traditional February term)

This time the Karjala Cup will be contested unusually by 6 teams, Since it´s the Olympic season and the NHL not allowing their players to start in PyeongChang the Team Canada asked for participation in this tournament to test their possible Olympic team. The organizers invited for this edition Switzerland as well. The format of the round-robin is a bit strange tough, each team will play only 3 games against 3 different opponents, the team with highest amount of points after 3 games will win the tourney. For the cumulative standing of the Euro Hockey Tour only the matches and points from the matches between :CZE:FIN:RUS and :SWE will be counted

The tournament will start tomorrow by matches between Sweden and Czech Republic in Orebro and Switzerland - Canada in Biel, All other next matches will be played in Finland.

To notice that also the next December´s stage the One Channel Cup in Russia will be played by almost same 6 teams too, only Switzerland will be replaced by South Korea.

nice game between SUI and CAN yesterday night...:d

SUI, despite not having a lot of their best players (who were on the ice the night before in the CHL) on their roster, played a very good game and took the early lead, but CAN immediately reacted and tied the score...

then a minute of down focus by the Swiss gave the Canadians the chance to score 2 goals in a row and since then the game was under control of the guys with the maple leaf on their sweaters...

a late goal by the Swiss (with the empty net) was just "cosmetic" and Canada took the win home by a final score of 3-2...

to be honest, CAN weren't that impressive, but still they got what they wanted more and could take care of the usual Swiss team, a group of players who always play well but who always have so much troubles to score some goals...they just can't do it...

unfortunately I couldn't watch much of the CZE @ SWE match, but for what I saw Sweden were clearly the better team, with the Czechs having quite a bad performance for what concerns their defensive game...

later tonight I expect a very good show with the Russia @ Finland game (which I'm not gonna miss for any reason...thanks to CT4 HD )...
