I'm missing the point of what this in your sentence means  

 

One team winning and one team losing? Doesn't the same kind of thing happen in individual sports, where someone wins and someone loses?

Because favourites always win on extra time/tie breakers/penalties. Why even watch then.

For example for all the many times favourites had already lost before there were even penalties or extra minutes played?  

 

It's the same as saying "I don't like tennis because the favourite usually wins in the 5th set". Well yes, the favourites usually win, that's why they are the favourites
