Oh well, we still won the bronze medal :)  So 2 medals from Lahti so far.

And Niskanen/Jauhojärvi are still the defending olympic gold medalists ;)

No lack of excitement in Team Sprint at Lahti 2017

99482_G08_W01.jpg

Norway and Russia have won the gold medals at today's Team Sprint competition at the 2017 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti, Finland.

For the ladies from Norway it was their 3rd consecutive win in the team sprint event.  They previously won in Sochi OWG 2014 and Falun WSC 2015.  They become the first nation to win 3 in a row in this event.  The silver medal went to Russia who finished +5.56 back of Norway. After a very strong performance from first leg skier Yulia Belorukova on her final lap it was just a two-team battle.  Natalia Matveeva did her best to keep it close with Norway's anchor Maiken Caspersen Falla but Falla proved to be too strong.  In third place for the first time ever in a classic team sprint event was the United States of America.  Jessie Diggins already a silver medalist in the sprint at these Championships used her excellent downhill skills to overtake Sweden's Stina Nilsson coming into the stadium and led her into the final turn.  From there Diggins managed to hold Nilsson off to give the USA the bronze medal just 0.19 seconds ahead of Sweden and +18.38 behind the winning time of Norway.

In the men's competition is looked to be a gold or at worst a silver medal for the home team Finland as Iivo Niskanen erased his deficit to Norway on the final lap but a crash between him and Norway's Emil Iversen entering the final curve left Finland with the bronze.

Navigating safely around the tangle up Russia and Italy came to the finish line for the gold and silver.  The Jury deliberated for almost 30 minutes to decided who the bronze medal would go to and in the end Finland who crossed the line in third was awarded the bronze medal.

Our Dutch commentator directly after the finish by the way: "Gold for Russia, silver for Italy and the Finnish fans can be happy with a nice bronze medal for their team"

Ok, after some time maybe, but please tell me in which universe fans from Finland can be happy with this bronze medal directly after the finish :p (where Finland might also be replaced by any random country, the big thing being it's the home country)

Oh we are happy about it. It took us what, 1-2 days to be happy about it :d
But the fact is that that's a lost bronze. For example Pärmäkoski won silver.

Alright, time for another gold for Bjoergen :p

(who knows, maybe Pärmäkoski could pull of a stunt, that'd be awesome)

Hope and wish for a good result for Alena today, after her frustrating 31st place 0.02s behind the top 30 in the sprint, it´s our last chance to earn something interesting and nice for this sport at this WCh. a top 20 is probably unrealistic but something close to that would be fine and will bring at least a small smile in the face of our nordic skiing

So apparently getting below 180 FIS points in this specific qualifying race was indeed needed. This was the result:

And only people from the top-7 are participating today. Not even all of them, because Paul, Skender and Auzina aren't here.

    • will have 5 representatives in Luge at the 2026 Olympics.      Jozef Ninis (Top pic) in the M Singles will compete at his 6th consecutive WOG !!! He debuted in Torino 2006 to close the circle in another Italian resort in 2026, by this he set the new Slovak Winter Olympic record of participation and tie the all time one with Erik Vlček competing at 6 games in Sprint Canoeing as well.   The remaining quartet (Pic 2) will debut at the Olympics, all still Juniors Christián Bosman & Bruno Mick in the M Doubles and still schoolgirls Viktória Praxová & Desana Špitzová in the olympic premiere of the W Doubles     Must also be said, that we were quite unlucky in this qualifiers periode, Marián Skupek missed the second M Singles quota by 1 point and ended first non-qualified athlete and the experienced doubles Vaverčák/Zmij which was in clear qualifying position ended the season after Vaverčák injured his knee in the training before the Sigulda race 2 weeks ago   Also for the first time no W Singles participation for us meaning also obviously no participation in the Mixed Relay competition for the first time as well   Team (Updated as of 12th January 2026) 40 Athletes (30 M + 10 W)
