Turkish delight

Continental Cup anniversary starts with surprise

Turkish delight

The first round of the IIHF Continental Cup’s 20-year-anniversary season finished with a historic achievement.

For the first time a Turkish team won a round robin tournament and gained a place in the second round. Zeytinburnu Istanbul, national champion in the last two seasons, was a class ahead of the opposition in the event, held at the Winter Palace in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia.

The team from the Turkish metropolis will play its second-round tournament in Group B in Jaca, Spain, with the Nottingham Panthers (Great Britain), HK Liepaja (Latvia) and CH Jaca (Spain) from 21st to 23rd October. Group C will be played at the same time in Tychy and includes GKS Tychy (Poland), DVTK Jegesmedvek Miskolc (Hungary), Dunarea Galati (Romania) and Acroni Jesenice (Slovenia).

The team led by head coach Deniz Ince was assured of the first-place finish already on Saturday after the second day of action has finished. Zeytinburnu won its first two games against the champions of Bulgaria and Serbia, respectively 5-1 over host Irbis-Skate Sofia on Friday and 8-3 versus Partizan Belgrade the next day. When Irbis-Skate defeated HC Bat Yam 6-4, it became clear that Zeytinburnu will finish on top of the table no matter what happens in the last game against the Israeli team, which lost its first game too (5-4 vs Partizan).

We came here to win the tournament, but honestly we didn’t expect to do it so early – after the second day,” said Deniz Ince. A year ago Zeytinburnu was leading CSKA Sofia 5-3 in the last minute of the second period in a game for the first place in Group A. In the end CSKA won 9-5 scoring five unanswered goals in the third period. Now it was the other way around. The Turkish champion was tied going into the last period in both games – 1-1 with Irbis-Skate and 3-3 with Partizan – but scored four and five goals respectively to win them.

Last year was much more difficult for us because we had only three practice session before the start of the tournament in Belgrade. This time we came to Sofia with seven. A year ago one period cost us the first place and it was quite tough to digest it. So the players were very motivated to win this time around. They were aware that they have to play on their highest level for full 60 minutes and were confident that this can be done. Both games were won in the third period,” explained Ince after the second win.

The decisive moments in the opening game against Irbis-Skate were the two goals within a span of 74 seconds that Serkan Gumus scored to increase the lead to 4-1 with 3:39 left to play in regulation time. 23-year-old Russian Konstantin Kuchkin had two goals and assist and his compatriot, 24-year-old goalie Nikita Sandrey, had 27 saves. Kuchkin and Sandrey (also known as Sandyrev) played last season in Turkey for Erzurum and the two players hailing from Magnitogorsk have experience from the highest Russian junior league MHL.

They came to us and said that they want to play for our team. At the same time we were able to keep the roster from last season. Only the Salt brothers (Kaan and Hakan, which were born in 1999 and 2000) went to play in USA. Our foreigners are not only good young players, but also good people. The whole atmosphere is great – the players are buying into the team game philosophy and they have a good time together on and off the ice. Our goalie played very well and the offence was quite effective,” said Ince.

Olexi Voitsekhivsky had a goal and three assists in the third period against Partizan and was 4+6 in the rout over HC Bat Yam (19-2) on the last day of the tournament. In that game the other Ukrainian on the roster, Oleg Zadoyenko, had five goals and Gumus tallied four. Zeytinburnu scored 11 of the 19 goals in uneven situations on the ice – six power-play and five shorthanded goals (one during a 3-on-5).

We are much stronger than last year when we had only one [strong] line and this line had to play like 35 minutes a game. Now we have three good lines and the other teams just can’t skate with us. We are too fast for them,” said the Finnish forward Anton Peronmaa, captain of Zeytinburnu. “This is my third season in Turkey. I started in December 2014 and at that time there were not many imports because there was no money in the sport. We had too many easy games, but hockey is growing up and last season four teams had foreigners on their rosters. We have more games in the season; also junior hockey is developing better. Hopefully the level will keep going up and we will not have easy games in the future.

Peronmaa applied for Turkish citizenship last season and is waiting for the decision. He hopes to play for Turkey at the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division II Group B, which will be held in Auckland, New Zealand, 4-10 April. Kuchkin and Sandrey will also apply for citizenship, but Zadoyenko and Voitsekhivsky would have to wait a couple of years to become eligible because they played for Ukraine at IIHF events.

To be the first Turkish team in the second round of the Continental Cup is a special thing. I am very lucky – I have so many firsts in Turkish hockey. This is another one and I’m very happy for my players. They really worked very hard and now they will have their place in the history of Turkish hockey,” said Deniz Ince, who was the captain of the Turkish national team in its first win at a World Championship event in 1998, the first goal scorer for the national inline hockey team and the first Turkish player to play abroad, in 1999/2000 for Levski Sofia in Bulgaria.

Last season I was coaching the team that won the gold medal in Division III and I had eight players under 18 on the roster. That was the biggest accomplishment for the senior national team, having such a young roster and to be successful. We have a good group of young players, they really work hard and they want to develop. That’s our goal and we have been working in this direction in the last couple of years with the new administration, to develop young players. I’m really hopeful because there are so many new rinks coming in the next couple of years and that’s going to help a lot. Now we need better coaching education and we work on it too. Maybe we will bring some foreign coaches to work in our programs with the youth groups. We work very closely with Finland, their federation helped us a lot. This year for example our goalies were educated by a Finnish goalie coach.

When you’re playing or coaching for a young hockey country you have opportunities to put your name in history. It was a special feeling, especially to do it here in Sofia, to comeback after 16 years and to meet so many friends. We won the Turkish title with Stoian Batchvarov (now executive director of Bulgarian Ice Hockey Federation) in 1998 when we were teammates at Istanbul Paten Kulubu,” Ince said.

The Russian Alexander Bumagin became on Tuesday the first player who scored against all 29 KHL teams :d Amazing stuff, thanks tuesdays goal against the new chinese team Kunlun Red Stars the 29years old forward of Lada Togliatti completed the cycle, He scored a goal also against his current team few seasons before

Alexander Bumagin sa stal prvým hráčom s gólom proti všetkým 29 tímom

In other side, finally started the NHL new season, and what a start! The draft number one Auston Matthews scored 4 goals in his first ever NHL game !!! First player ever who achieved something like that in his debut.

Also here The First slovak goal of the NHL season scored by Richard Pánik and assisted by Marián Hossa :)

In the sadder side, First Finlands NHL player and one of the biggest Finlands star and world hockey legend of all times Mati Hagman has passed away at age 61. RIP :(

And Here it is, another historic moment happened last night. Marián Hossa scored his 500th careers NHL goal. !!!

He became only the 44th player of the whole NHL history to pass this historic bareer. They are now only 4, currently playing in the NHL with this 500+ NHL goals achievement. the legendary czech Jaromír Jágr, the Canadian Jarome Iginla and the Russian striker "tsar" Alexander Ovechkin.

He is also only the 3rd slovak who managed to score this magic number in the NHL after the legendary Stan Mikita in the 1950-60s (541 NHL Goals) and Peter Bondra in the 1990-2000s (503 NHL Goals)

Marián Hossa scored last night his 500th NHL goal in his 1240 NHL careers match. And just look at this celebration at the United Center in Chicago.  Majo Hossa our legend ! Congrats mate !

ahahahahaha :roflmao:

unbelievable own goal in the KHL. Severstal Cherepovets won over Metalurg Novokuznetsk 2-1, but the winning goal was a special one, something unreal, during a delayed penality the 6 players of Novokuznetsk played they advantage so terribly disastrously that they lost the puck and scored a own goal in their empty net without any opponent player touching or hitting the puck which would be ended the advantage of the delayed penalty.

    • https://www.fantaski.it/news/2024/11/22/tommaso-sala-si-rompe-il-crociato-in-allenamento.asp   Now the entire Italian team will be hanging on Vinatzer, who will finish maybe 30% of the races in the season. Tragedy. Sala was not an outstanding skier, but he could have made it to the top 10 several times. The biggest debacle in slalom in decades is coming  This winter seasons haven't even started yet but I'm fed up with him. We have regression in every discipline, Vittozzi disease, disaster in men`s alpine skiing, what else? Unfortunately, we have been much better in summer sports than in winter sports recently.
    • Tense men's semi but  10  8 after 11.      made a 3 in the 10th!
    • Violette Braun is the first  woman in a World Cup since 2009. Today she obliterated the NR in the 1500 by 3 seconds (2'04) on a rather slow track. Second 1500 ever for her, first was in Inzell a few weeks back (2'07) with what seemed like very good conditions.   It means a lot of room for improvement and a good sign for the 3000 which is her real strong event at the moment - she lacks basic speed but had one of the fastest final laps today, 10th over Div A and B. Faster last than penultimate lap must be quite unusual too.
    • When? I understand this is a joke about this great job
    • The same thing happened after Turin 2006. That hall later was never used for skating competitions again, only the Indoor ECH in athletics was organized there once in 2009 and that was it. After that it was only used for commercial fairs etc. It will be the same with Milan. Regarding the indoor arena in Collalbo, it was a great idea to make it an Italian center of skating sports for many years: good location, high altitude, tourist town. Well, but according to the organizers, it`s not worth doing it, but why? Why is`t not worth doing anything here but Germany has a similar track in Inzell and it is possible there? They should hire a good manager who will develop a plan for them to make it worth doing. The same is with the bobsleigh track in Cortina. It was also not worth renovating it and if Salvini's and other big politics and determination hadn`t come into it, the competition would probably have been in Austria or St. Moritz.   The cooperation with the Netherlands is probably only supposed to concern short track. Besides, this cooperation will not do anything if we don`t have at least one indoor track for training in the summer and early autumn. The Dutch Federation isn`t a charity and will not build us infrastructure for free so that we can train on it. There are no miracles. It`s probably more about taking advantage of the opportunity to train with someone like Fontana, who is a legend in short track. After 2026 this cooperation will end, when she leaves.
    • For Ghiotto to win 2 golds at the Olympics, he would have to be the second van der Poel or Sablikova in they pick of form. You have to be a genius to beat this whole coalition of Norwegians, Dutchmen etc. However, I don't see that much talent in him. I'd like to be wrong, but I'm afraid that he'll end up with some silver-bronze in the 10 km and that's it. If he starts losing to Eitrem now, who is 22 years old, it won't bode well for the future, and there's also Roest + maybe another Dutchman will jump out. Generally, our team is poorly prepared for this season and it's not like Ghiotto is on individual training on the moon and has just come down to earth and will now win everything while the rest of the team are in terrible form. Of course, the lack of form of Bosa or Trentini means e.g. 20th place, not 10th, but for Ghiotto it could mean 4/5 place, instead of 1st. It's the same with the team. For today, the only positive performance for us is Lollobrigida's 2nd place in the b category of the women's 1500 meters and Fontana's solid performance in the same event. The rest is terrible.
    • Costantini & Mosaner will back to play together for the frist time since Beijing 2022 Our NOC and Federation do an amazing work.
    • Right now I’m watching Scotland-Switzerland at the European Curling Championships, even though Germany-Norway would probably be a more interesting game… (can’t find any streaming options for it)   At 4:00am Scotland-Italy in the women’s bronze medal match, and at 9:00am TBD-TBD in the men’s bronze medal match   We’ll see if I’ll have enough time for the Davis Cup, Women’s/Men’s Slalom WC Gurgul, Skeleton WC Yanqing, BPT Challenge Chennai, BWF China Masters, WTT Finals Fukuoka, GSOC Kioti National, Freestyle Skiing WC Beijing, Alpine Skiing WC Killington, Moguls WC Ruka   Also will be following along with the Canadian Curling Olympic Mixed Doubles Qualifier, UCI Champions League Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Open Water WC Neom, Luge WC Lillehammer/Cross Country WC Ruka, Ski Jumping WC Ruka   Friday (November 22) 4:30 PM: NBA - Warriors v. • As far as I am concerned, there are two very simple problems: infrastructure and the lack of cooperation between sports federations. Let me explain. The MiCo2026 Olympics will provide virtually no legacy in ice sports, there is still a lack of an indoor hall, there is no federal centre that has been promised for so many years. It could have been an opportunity to make a nice roof in Baselga di Pinè, but instead they preferred to make temporary facilities in Rho.   The second problem is the total lack of cooperation between roller skating and speed skating, we have a huge pool and we are not exploiting it. Fortunately we are doing a few small collegiate events, the technical collaboration with the Netherlands absolutely must be exploited.   I am not so negative however about the current situation, Ghiotto practically on the 10k seems to be off the scale (watch out for the Czech and Norwegian) and he can medal in the 5k and drag the pursuit team. In the mass start you have more cards in both the men's and women's, let's see what Fontana does. And a Fontana-Peveri-Lollobrigida pursuit team can also play for a third place
    • Canada Team Size Prediction for Winter Olympic Games 2026 Milano Cortina   Ski Sports   Alpine Skiing  (13) - That's been the team size the last couple of Olympics so it's a safe bet again. Cross Country Skiing  (10) - Not too familiar with the qualification system. Probably around 6 men and 4 women. Ski Jumping  (5) - Loutitt, Strate and Maurer for sure on the women's side. Possibly a 4th will qualify. On the men's side, if Bowd-Clowes returns, then he should also qualify. Nordic Combined  (0) - Been a nonexistent sport for a while. No athletes competing in the World Cup or Continental Cup. Freestyle Skiing  (32) - Should qualify a team in mixed aerials which means a maximum team size of 32 athletes. Which athletes in which disciplines to be determined. Snowboarding  (24) - Full teams in slopestyle and big air. Then somewhere between 1-4 athletes in the other disciplines. Biathlon  (6) - Based on the Nations Cup last year, the men finished outside the top 20 and wouldn't qualify a relay team (and that's without Russia and Belarus). With Christian Gow's retirement, that makes things even more difficult. Women's relay should still qualify though. Ski Mountaineering  (1) - Gonna be optimistic here and say that one athlete will qualify either through the World Rankings or continental quota.     Skating Sports   Speed Skating  (16) - 7 to 8 men, 8 to 9 women. For now, I'll say 8 of each gender. Short Track Speed Skating  (10) - Full team size. With the current skill level of the team, anything else would be a tragedy. Figure Skating  (12) - Most likely 1 man (I hope) and 1 woman, then 2-3 pairs and 2-3 ice dance couples. For now, let's say 2 in pairs and 3 in ice dance.     Sleigh Sports   Luge  (7) - 2 women + 1 entry in each of the other disciplines Skeleton  (4) - 1 or 2 men + 2 or 3 women Bobsleigh  (14) - 2 men's crews (in both events) and 3 women's crews (in both events)     Team Sports   Curling  (12) - Full team or else you might as well burn the federation to the ground. Ice Hockey  (48) - Both men's and women's teams already qualified       Total Optimistic Prediction  -  (229) Total Pessimistic Prediction  - (184)   Total Realistic Prediction  -  (214)
