Winter Olympic Games 2018 Debuting, Coming Back, Returning and Missing Nations

:SGP Cheyenne Goh did not advance out of the preliminaries in the women's 1500m.

Out of the athletes that advanced only 2 can pass her in points. This would put her into 36th position overall. The top 36 do qualify. Canada has 4 athletes ahead of her, so in fact she is ranked 35th. There is also an athlete from Italy who did not advance who might get more points in the standings, which would drop her to 36th.

So worst case scenario is she will be ranked 36th??? So that means she has unofficially qualified for PyeongChang 2018, and will be come the first Singaporean to compete in the Winter Olympics :champion:

PS. I hope I am not wrong...

From what it looked like I think she got lucky and everyone in front of her in Shanghai fell. But that’s part of sport and it’s great for her.

Yeah Goh was like 10 seconds behind in the semifinal, so she wouldn’t have been close otherwise. There must have been four people battling and Warakomska brings down two of them. :d

Sport is so funny sometimes.

I've been talking with someone who works for NBC in America,

This is what he said

"It's way more complicated than that. Because only 60 women can compete at the Games - and 40 of those spots are taken up by athletes on relay teams - there are only 20 spots remaining for athletes like Goh. It's possible she'll get bumped due to the quota capacity. In other words, it's better to be ranked 40th (and a member of a country with a relay team) than 32nd (and not a member of a relay)."

Well, looks like there were even some unused athlete places in 2014, as only 116 athletes were entered.

Our athlete Vojtech Loudin qualified for the 1500m despite being ranked 52nd. (49th if you could extra athletes)

Must have been a lot of reallocations. Or I'm not understanding the system right.

Fun fact: Singapore actually had a quota in 2014 in 1000m. Similar qualification style to Goh. But the athlete wasn't very competitive. She did 500m in 58 seconds, so they probably rejected the quota.

    • Earlier today, Taiwan beat the USA    Of course it's car from the best US tram but it's still a big deal for Taiwanese baseball
    • And even here we lose to France? I really don't know what's the point of organizing the Olympics if you can't make progress in practically any sport. France has the Olympics in 2030 and there they will definitely prepare 100%, just like for Paris. We can't do that. It's obvious that in ski jumping we have no chance of winning medals, but decency dictates that we should at least win here with a France like that.
    • There is no snow in Lillehammer
    • Finally the ski jumping season begins 11 teams in the (real) mixed team competition, no Switzerland.
    • Most of our athletes are constantly bothered by something: the pressure to qualify, the miss of pressure when they have already qualified, etc. It's the same in football: at the beginning of the season they are a poor form becouse of a little played and at the end of the season they are tired. They are always looking for excuses. A real champion always plays at a high level, like Sinner, and doesn`t look for 1000 excuses for his poor performance.
    • Think it is mentally difficult for the two teams with the Olympic place guaranteed and the pressure off, whereas everyone else is absolutely playing at 110%.  I'm sure things will be better once they get to Milan.
    • There's no point in cheating, these were terrible European Championships for us. Retronaz out of form, Constantini with a huge number of big mistakes. Only illness can excuse it... We've probably lost the last 10 matches with Switzerland... It looks like Constantini had the tournament of her life in mixed doubles in 2022 in Beijing and she will never reach this level again.
    • What good is it to us if we took 4th place and lost an important match? If Constantini was sick, I forgive her, but I'm afraid that the Italian team will not exceed a certain level. Yes, they have made progress since 2022, but they lack that one decisive step to become a class team. Here we lost all important matches with teams at our/higher level: Sui x2, Sco x2, Swe. We only won with the one we were supposed to win with. I don't believe in a medal for this team in Cortina. After 2022, it seemed that Constantini could dominate women's curling, but it didn't happen that way. After Sinner's recent successes, I opened my eyes a bit and started to demand more from our athletes, coaches, and officials. I have no intention of being satisfied with 4th place, because with this approach, you won't achieve anything great.
    • play their best, but only get 1, so  get bronze 6-4!
    • Oh dear, once again a 50% shot from Constantini when she needed 100%.   blank the end & go into the 10th with the Hammer of Thor.
