9 swimmers officially selected. Looks like they've used the relay team to get Brendan Hyland into the butterfly event. Shane Ryan listed as a relay participant too. Only 2 relay only swimmers

Others including McSharry, Wiffen and Walshe can swim their 2nd event too

QUALIFICATION UPDATE

Swim Ireland today announced a team of 9 swimmers to represent Ireland at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Joining the 6 already selected swimmers will be Brendan Hyland, who received an OST invitation from FINA. Swim Ireland confirmed that this invitation proved crucial in ensuring that Ireland could field a men's 4x200m freestyle relay team because per rules a nation may only enter 2 relay-only swimmers in the event. It is for this reason that Swim Ireland approved Brendan Hyland's invite, contrary to the usual policy position of refusing such invitations.

The two relay-only swimmers have been named as Jack McMillan and Finn McGeever.

In addition, some of the OQT swimmers on the team have been approved to swim in a second event in which they had achieved the OST standard. Full details of the events the Irish team will participate in can be found below.

That means we now have secured 116 athlete quotas (61 men and 55 women) with representatives in 72 events, across 20 different sports.

Thats a surprise. Really thought they would select Ian O'Sullivan.

Disappointed in that to be honest.

QUALIFICATION UPDATE

Athletics Ireland today announced their finalised team of 25 athletes and 2 alternates who will represent Ireland at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. The selection confirmed Leon Reid's participation in the men's 200m which had been in doubt. It also settled the matter of the mixed relay team nominations with Phil Healy, Sophie Becker, Cillin Greene, Chris O'Donnell, Robert McDonnell and Cliodhna Manning named as members of the relay squad.

Meanwhile, Olympic veteran Derek Burnett has been officially nominated to represent Ireland in the men's trap shooting event in Tokyo. It will be the 51-year-old's fifth Olympic Games, having competed previously in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012. He equals the record of most Olympic Games appearances by an Irish athlete, currently held jointly by Olympic medalists Robert Heffernan (athletics) and David Wilkinson (sailing).

That means we now have secured 116 athlete quotas (62 men and 56 women) with representatives in 72 events, across 20 different sports.

Just replied in the other thread. They’ve said it’s a squad of 25 with 22 names as individuals

So the relay team is Healy + 3 (and 2 alternates). Suspect they’ve left it like that deliberately…

Yes just saw your reply. Well on this thread we will stick to what the OFI are counting and I will bring the athletics quotas back to 25.

Meanwhile Nhat Nguyen has learned his group for the men's singles badminton. He is in Group F with number 10 seed :TPE Wang Tzu Wei and :SRI Niluka Karunaratne. Not a bad draw for him and hopefully he can get a victory under his belt.

    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
    • The worst editions in XXI century for us were Vancouver: 5 medals (only 1 gold for Razzoli's on the penultimate day) and Sochi: 8 medals (but no gold). Turin was already a prelude to this bad period, although the number of gold medals was ok. Overall we won fewer medals at home than in 2002 and this was probably the only case in the 21st century when the host country won fewer medals at home than 4 years earlier, either in summer or winter. In general the years 2008-2016 were very bad in our sport, both in summer and winter. Only 2018 in Korea was a slight rebuild + 2 fantastic summer editions in Tokyo and Paris. in Beijing 2022 we won a lot of medals - 17 but only 2 gold (If it weren't for Gogga's injury, I think it would have been 4 gold).
    • Totallympics had  users at one point, but I haven't seen any hanging around in a while.
    • In terms of total medals, yes. In terms of golds, I’d be fine with anywhere from 6-8.   @intoronto you don’t think we’ll do better or at least the same? Bit surprising.
    • Tadeucci was very good and took bronze
    • On the Olympics I don't like to count golds to analyse the performance, I think the best data are the top8 and medals. In both fields I expect a big improvement (obviously not on the 'pure' number, but on the percentage of medal or top8 events)
