Medal Prospects for Team Canada for the Rest of the Games?

Recommended Posts

Just thinking about things (since NOTHING is going on right now and work is boring).

Not jinxing anything, but Kim Boutin has a great chance at tying Oleksiak and De Grasse for most medals by a Canadian here in Italy. She stands at 5 now, and has shots in the 500 and the women's relay. She could also tie or surpass Hamelin and Klassen as the most decorated Winter Olympians. I guess you don't get chatter unless you have a gold (and she could still get one).

Dubois also has a chance to do the same, but not getting out of the heats in the 1000 today hurt those chances.

Something to keep an eye on, anyway.

That's why I mentioned their medal totals in the Day 4 thread....some exciting stuff but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

I'm satisfied with where Canada is with medals. I was hopeful for a curling bronze, but Maltais and Oldham coming through on their mid-long-shots make up for it. Canada could have won gold today, but they could have just as easily not have medaled at all, so a silver is perfectly fine right now.

They're looking good in moguls and figure skating, too. Some disappointing results besides medals in ski jumping and x-country skiing.

Thursday is make or break. Some really good shots at medals, including some golds. We'll see how the curling teams are going, and it's the first game for the men's hockey team, too.

I know because of the slow schedule for Canada we're getting antsy, but it'll all be worth it when the medals start to flood in later. I hope.

Agree with mostly everything, but you can't say Oldham was a mid-long shot, I'd say she was among the favourites. She's been so consistent.

Gilles/Porier are looking good, as is the rest of the team, but the judges are probably going to screw us over. The British judge gave Fear/Gibson an inflated score, and ... for the Canadians a score 3 and 1/2 points lower than any of the others judges, can't tell me this isn't judges being judges.  (Canadian judge gave the Britts their second highest score)

Okay, after looking over a few of the predictions offered by news outlets, it looks like Mik wasn’t favoured to win gold in the individual event. So I feel a little more calm… for now….

If Canada doesn’t win any gold medals at these Games, or fewer than Beijing, what do you think the response at the organizational/federal level would or should be? How exactly do we fix this?

This is my question too. I do think some of our organizations have got to clean house though, especially Hockey Canada.

By that, do you mean replacing coaching staff? Or does that also include administrative change? Changes at the leadership level could help, but I'm not sure specifically how.

I’m afraid to ask, but where can medals come from in these final two days?

We know that Canada is guaranteed at 2 more, in men’s hockey and curling, bringing us to 19 (hopefully gold, but that’s a big ask right now).

Based on the schedule, these are what I’m thinking are our best shots:

Freestyle Skiing

1. Mixed Aerials Team

2. Men’s Ski Cross

3. Women’s Half Pipe

Curling

4. Women’s Team

Speed Skating

5. Men’s Mass Start

6. Women’s Mass Start (Blondin)

7. Women’s Mass Start (Maltais)

Ya that makes for grim reading… we’ll be lucky to end with six golds.

    • Yes, that's Haaland's cousin Braut Brunes. If he has a bad day Raków is usually scrapping for 1-0 victory unless they concede a goal. Ivi Lopez is the playmaker but he's not as sharp since an injury last season.   Lech & Jagiellonia are the two strongest clubs right now, Raków probably #3. I discount league surprises and of course Legia which is stuck in relegation zone
    • On transfermarkt, Raków is worth 42 million euros and Jagiellonia only 32, but it is known that this is only a theory. On paper, the most valuable clubs in Poland are Lech and Raków: €42 million each. Raków have a strong Norwegian attacker from what I can see on internet.
