One match yesterday made everybody upset and angry here.

This is the handiwork of :FRA Ibrahim Ghanem at 72kg quarterfinal. for the entire match he hit Danial Sohrabi all over his face with punch, slap, headbutt, shoulders and eventually ended up winning the match bcz of the end of Sohrabi's bleeding time ! :wall:(per UWW rules you have 4 minutes of bleeding time)

Sohrabi came back the next day to win the bronze, with a shaved head. swollen blue eyes (both), lots of stitches on his lips, one eyebrow and his chin.

Ironically the abusive French guy did that again in the final against :AZE Ganizade in the last minute leaving him bloody. only this time the refs weren't corrupt/terrible and penalized him and therefore he lost the gold he never deserved.

Since when has France had strong a good influence in this sport? It's always been a rather weak country, while Azerbaijan has always been strong and corrupted referees.

for years Mr Michel Dusson was a key member of former FILA (and current UWW) and was in center of lots of scandals in this sport. (ask Guenot brother how they won their Olympic medals)

I don't think France has influence in the current UWW. but it was not about their influence, it was just UWW's desperate try to help more countries winning medals. (specially a strong sporting nation like France) and Iran already had too much success in that day.

or maybe I'm just too delusional and it was just one very bad referee :dunno:

and of course because of the strong protest from the Iranian delegation, Ghanem was being watched closely in the final and got penalized when he headbutt Ganizade.

in a normal world Ghanem had to be disqualified and suspended for a long time for what he did in the QF. even in MMA you don't leave the cage with those number of injuries.

In your opinion Karelin was really that good to stay at the top for so many years, or did he have some kind of protection from the judges? Because not losing for 13 years is shocking for me:yikes: Especially since many rivals could have tried to unfairly attack him, eliminate him, etc., like the French. What do you think about this?

well this is a sensitive matter :d

this is the list of top guys in UWW, that gives you an idea. some (not all) of these guys are very powerful, specially Mamiashvili and Ruziev, of course and Lalovic himself

https://uww.org/about-uww/bureau-members

but I have to say the officiating is much much better comparing to 20 years ago. for example in Paris I saw only one very very very bad call (obvious cheating) in favor of Uzbekistan.

some former Soviet countries create their own units sometimes, I mean we see Uzbek refs support the Kazakh wrestler and therefore the Kazakh referee support the Uzbek wrestler in another match.

after years of watching wrestling, I feel more relaxed when I see the ref is from US or Japan or western Europe. (excluding Germany :d

as I said there is a culture of cheating in this sport, this is getting better and better, UWW under Lalovic did lots of good things but still a long way to go.

I really can't remember any controversy in his matches, he was really good, very very good actually.

but of course that was long time ago and without internet we couldn't watch all of his matches to judge better. but there are lots of videos available on the net from his matches, you can see he was just a monster.

a match between Karelin and Lopez would be fantastic. :d

Did he have any serious rivals from Iran at the time? Is he still remembered and respected in your country, or is that a distant memory and are there new heroes?

no :d we sucked big time in Greco at the time. we became relevant in Greco-Roman only since 2005

but he is very well known in our wrestling community, he is in Zagreb right now and I see our team members taking pics with him. :d so yeah he is well respected here, same as Mijain Lopez.

You still need to build a strong women's team, but that's probably more of a political case? Nevertheless, there are many more possibile medals to be won, of course, if that Iranian women are want to practice this sport. The same is for women volleyball.
