Looked into it a while back & qualification standards for all but the most popular events are basically all volunteers taken.

Sure, but as I said a while back this was always a big event for the old Communist countries.   At least part of the appeal for them was that they were very often the hosts & nobody was defecting from  to .

I dare say is a decent country in sports, overall certainly top-20, but entirely invisible in university sports (and I don't think anyone really knows it's going on).

We used to be the same, certainly for the Winter Games only the Curlers were ever interested.  Also there were a couple of recognised Sports Universities which would send competitors.

 

But now there is a much better organised British University Sports scene & they seem to be actively pushing people into it, holding qualifying comps etc.

Not in the Olympics, and at most once a year but I like it (mainly for the flips though)
