Ghiotto is only 4th today in the 5km in European Championships and that's without Roest:cry: Looking at the times, Eitrem is out of his reach today + Roest in his usual form. The Netherlands have managed to get 2 more skaters under 6.10 this season: Snellink and Huizinga. I'm afraid that it will be difficult for Ghiotto to even win a bronze medal in the 5 km. I also have concerns that Eitrem will soon start showing spectacular results in the 10 km.

The commentator kept saying something about saving something for a big 10km tommorow, so I guess we'll see.

I don't know if he will qualify for the 10 km - he is currently 7 and there is still 1500 to go... I have no information but it seems to me that Ghiotto is in poorer shape - maybe some illness? He already did poorly in the 500 meters, as for himself. In the 5 km, even in great shape, it may be difficult to win a medal: Eitrem is young and still growing, and Roest lost the last time at a big event to van der Poel in Bejing. To win gold in the 5 km, he will has to get close to van der Poel's world record. In my opinion, Ghiotto isn`t capable of such results and probably never will be.

Nothing particularly worrying, Anesi explained that Ghiotto is preparing for the World Cup and has not finalised the Europeans

Only in my opinion Eitrem in this form is beyond Ghiotto's reach for 5 km. This is already Roest's level from the last 2 years. To beat them both Ghiotto would have to have the race of his life. In addition 2 more Dutchmen are getting dangerously close. It`s crucial that Eitrem doesn`t get close to Ghiotto in the 10 km, because he is young and can still make a lot of progress.

Do you have any links to interviews with Marchetto, Anesi etc? What are Ghiotto's goals for this and next season? Do they think it`s possible to win 2 gold medals in 5 and 10 km next year?

Eitrem is young and improving, but he's still behind Ghiotto in terms of PB

when he'll have a better one, we can start worrying, not now

Tomorrow, Ghiotto is sure to ride the 10k even if he drops out of the top 8 after the 1500m, as he's the no.1 in the world in the longer distance, where his true opponent in 13 months will be :CZE Jilek, not the Norwegian (who's more comfortable with shorter distances) nor the Dutch guys

unless :SWE VdP comes back for real...in that case, a different scenario (not good for us) might open

p.s. as @Gianlu33 wrote, Ghiotto and the coaches know that he doesn't stand a chance in the overall ranking, so they decided to try and re-write the history books at the Calgary WC stage, using this weekend as a warm-up test

For me the Czech is still too young to be afraid of in 1 year. On the other hand, Eitrem will be very dangerous in 5 km and Roest was always 1 step ahead of Ghiotto in the last 2-3 rounds. If Ghiotto is counting on a double, he has to make progress in 5 km.

It doesn't look like the Swede will be back in 2026...

it will depend also a lot on the track and the ice quality

I think the track in Milan will be quite slow, which would favor Ghiotto also in the 5k (and damage somehow Lollobrigida, who could really be a contender in the 3k on a very quick track)

Also It will be hard to beat the Netherlands and Norway in the team and I'm still afraid that the USA will put Stolz on the team... I hope that the Italians will prepare the ice for Ghiotto and he will be able to test the conditions there in advance.

I'm counting on the same in luge, although the results of the Italian team there are so poor that even knowledge of the track probably won't help :(

    • I think the reason is that it's generally preferable to have a fast shooter in the 1st leg, and especially in the prone shooting, where Hofer is quite slow.   Now, I'm not saying I agree with the choice, because I don't. I think it's going to neutralize Giacomel's skiing skills in the 1st lap at least.   I guess the idea is to try and set a very fast pace in the 1st leg, which is usually quite tactical, but I'm afraid that's going to force Giacomel to risk too much because he will feel he has to make some time somehow.   Regardless, Italy must be on the podium tomorrow. I think that would be crucial for the following races as well. I think France is the clear favorite, but the other teams are not stronger than Italy on paper.
