I get where Epic is coming from, he's come through a torrent period in the 80s and 90s where we couldn't even buy a medal let alone the amount we have now, but given our recent success I think it's somewhat understandable for some of us to be annoyed at getting silver instead of gold (even though silver is still an amazing feat) as we're now a top sporting nation and we should really be producing more champions than we have done so far.

Oh god, it's frustrating for sure! But I don't think it warrants gnashing of teeth and rending of garments to quite the extent that some maybe do. And it's certainly not a sign that a) we're victims of terrible luck, or b) individual athletes are irredeemable failures because they just missed out on gold.

Thiam is going to dust KJT, soild medal chance yes, gold no chance, mens 4x400 and relay chaos are are best hope of gold on the track

The rest of those suggested above are solid shots, we just need a change in luck. Hitting 19 that we got in beijing needs to be our minimum aim now (but i have a bad feeling the bookies will be right and we'll be under 16)

I just don't agree with this. There's no *should* in sport. You have to earn it.

People seem to think that because I'm praising the performances of some of our athletes that means I'm not frustrated. I'm very frustrated.

But here's the difference between me and some of the comments - I'm frustrated *for* our athletes. Some of the comments here seem frustrated *in* our athletes.

And I'm trying not to be rude here, but it seems like some people care more about 'winning' some absurd pissing match between us and Australia that means nothing in the grand scheme of things. And seem to think that any medal that isn't gold - and the performances that got that medal -  is somehow therefore irrelevant.

Genuinely, why? What does it matter what a team 16 years ago did?

It's just so fucking sickening at this point with the near misses that it's become hard to celebrate the silvers - how many near misses can one team have at an Olympic games!?

Come 2028 the target is going to be based on golds for sure. Silver and bronzes are seen as faluires now.

UK sport set a target of top 5. If that is not reached they will surely be consequences or there is no point having a target.

I'd be both happy and shocked if the men's madison and women's omnium even get a medal tbh. Who's even competing for us in the Women's Omnium?

Neah. And yes she definitely should be in contention for a medal.

the men’s Maddison is wide open. GB have a good chance at a medal or even winning; it’s very open.

as for the long list of projections above, there are slim chances at golds (KJT - Thiam has quite a buffer over her on recent form) and strong chances (Emma in 2 events; Ethan; women’s kite, Bradley sinden and Jade in TKW (caden and rose have chances too but less strong I’d argue)

I think minor medals where a clear favourite has underperformed then I’d accept people moaning. But today, MHS runs a huge European record; and the men’s team pursuit kept a tenth down to a team who smashed the WR for 95% of the race before the mishap.

Im still confident we finish above France even though Aussies look out of reach currently. The cyclists will need to clean up what’s left to get us close

Because I think that's roughly where a country with our population size/ money invested/ and talent capable should be finishing. 20 golds is about where GB should be at, we wont this time and thats fine, next is to avoid the "worst gold medal return since athens" kind of talk. Therefore aim for beijing total. Not everyone in the country supports the amount of money we spend on sports and will be happy for a reason to have a pop.

Would you genuinely not be disappointed in the squad a whole if, lets say, we end up with 14 golds and finish 6/7th in the medal table?
