women's -49kg

Gold:  Jiang Huihua (216kg Total)

Silver:  Ri Song Gum (213kg Total)

Bronze:  Hou Zhihui (209kg Total)

in the first competitions of the Grand Prix II in Doha, finally  did show up on the international stage after a few years' absence

 

and they immediately set the tone 

 

they won both the non-Olympic weight classes completed so far (Won Hyon Sim, women's -45kg with 181kg Total and Pang Un Chol, men's -55kg with 268kg Total) and got a Silver medal in the Olympic class, women's -49kg

 

Ri's score would also have been good to put herself in qualifying position in the OQR, but having the team missed the previous mandatory events, they should still be out of the Paris Games, unless something strange (and unfair) happens in the next months.

 

in the women's -49kg class, we also have a new entry in the qualifying positions,  Katherin Oriana Echandia Zarate, who lifted 190kg in the Olympic Total and jumped up into the useful top 10 places, leaving  Lin Cheng Jing momentarily out

 

 Giulia Imperio also improved by a couple of kilos, but her 185kg Total isn't good enough to sneak in into the qualifying positions, actually she lost a place because of Zarate's result, so she's now in the 12th useful place, 2 outside the "magic line"

men's -61kg

Gold:  Pak Myong Jin (305kg Total)

Silver:  John Febuar Ceniza (298kg Total)

Bronze:  Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq (296kg Total)

Two more wins for , 11 different medallists in two events, an Olympic champion withdrawing when in the lead and a bombout by a multiple world record holder were among the highlights on day three of the IWF Grand Prix in Doha.

 

The gold and silver medallists in snatch failed to make a total. 

 

Olympic Champion  Li Fabin, who led at halfway on 137kg, withdrew with his left elbow heavily strapped.

 

 Eko Yuli Irawan was second on 136kg (ahead of the eventual winner,  Pak Myong Jin, who lifted a Total of 305kg), before bombing out in C&J in group B.

 

The C Group lifter  Mohamad Aniq finished 3rd in the men's -61kg class, in which 5 of the top 10 lifted yesterday in B and C sessions.

 

 John Ceniza was the only A Group lifter to make an improvement on his best total in the Paris 2024 rankings.

 

 teenager Hampton Morris moved into the top ten of the OQR thanks to an Olympic Total on 292kg, leaving  Arley Lazaro Calderon Licourt momentarily out of the qualifying positions.

 

He was the only athlete from outside Asia in the top eight of Today's competition.

 

 

In the non-Olympic class of the women's -55kg, the Gold Medal went to  Ri Su Yon (210kg Total) ahead of  Surodchana Khambao (193kg Total) and  Aleksandra Grigoryan (189kg Total).

men's -73kg

Gold:  Ritvars Suharevs (341kg Total)

Silver:  Shi Zhiyong (340kg Total)

double Olympic champion Shi Zhiyong is back on the international platform at last.

 

For the first time in 862 days since he won gold in Tokyo, Shi returned to action at the IWF Grand Prix II in Doha. 

 

He finished second to the improving European champion  Ritvars Suharevs, despite declining his final two clean and jerks in the 73kg A Group.

 

Shi is now the best  lifter in the OQR (7th overall, 6th useful position) after making 160-180-340, while Suharevs’ six-from-six 156-185-341 effort takes him up to 5th overall (4th useful position). 

 

Third placed  Weeraphon Wichuma, the 19-year-old world champion, won the C&J gold but made no gains in the rankings on 145-189-334, while fourth-placed  Julio Mayora also failed to better his top qualifying total after two snatch failures in his 145-188-333.

 

Two athletes from  and did not take up their entries here, leaving Oceania without a single eligible athlete at 73kg.

 

If all four other continental federations are represented in the top 10 by the end of qualifying (which is highly unlikely, as only Europe and Asia are currently represented among the Top 15 Nations in the OQR), that could lead to reallocation of the continental slot at this weight.

The non-Olympic men’s -67kg lost some lustre when multiple champion and world record holder  Chen Lijun withdrew.

 

That left the way clear for  Ri Won Ju to claim the 5th victory of the week for his Nation.

 

Ri, 21, finished second to Chen at the Asian Games with a total of 321kg and could have won with 20kg less than that in Doha.

 

He made all six lifts for 139-178-317, which left him way ahead of the only other man to hit the 300kg mark, Ivan Dimov from .

 

 Dimov was 2nd in snatch and total on 140-160-300, and snatch winner  Bunyad Rashimov was 3rd on 141-157-298.

 

Silver and bronze in C&J when to  Sairamkez Akmolda, fourth overall on 126-168-294, and seventh-placed  Ishimbek Muratbek on 120-164-284.
