L'Italia dovrà battere i padroni di casa e sarà necessario farlo con un risultato migliore rispetto a quello con cui Cuba sconfiggerà verosimilmente l’Iran, in caso di successo delle due squadre con lo stesso risultato si andrà a vedere il quoziente punti. In caso di fallimento in terra sudamericana, l’Italia dovrà aggrapparsi al ranking FIVB che al termine della fase preliminare della Nations League determinerà le ultime cinque squadre ammesse ai Giochi.
