Latest shocking news that is widely dicussed world wide. The whole world is basically busy discussing about how horrible is those people who are thrown out into the sea while working at the fishing vessel.

https://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2020/05/07/indonesian-sailors-deaths-on-chinese-fishing-vessel-raise-questions-about-working-conditions.html

Indonesian sailors’ deaths on Chinese fishing vessel raise questions about working conditions

The deaths of four Indonesian crew members with links to the same Chinese fishing vessel have raised concerns about working conditions on the vessel and others like it.

The case first entered the public eye after a video allegedly showing Chinese sailors throwing the body of a dead Indonesian crew member overboard went viral.

The footage was first featured on a news segment on South Korea’s Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) on Tuesday.

The video shows what appears to be an orange body bag being thrown off a fishing vessel by a group of men. One man can be seen praying in front of the body bag moments before it is thrown overboard.

Two unidentified Indonesian sailors who worked on the vessel spoke to MBC about their experience, claiming that those aboard the ship had endured poor living conditions.

“We had to [work] for around 30 hours. We were given a meal break every six hours. We would just sit around during the breaks,” one of the sailors said.

The other sailor said they were made to drink filtered sea water during work, which eventually took a toll on their health.

“We became nauseated. We could no longer drink [sea water]. There was one time when our throats became clogged with phlegm,” he said, adding that some even experienced breathing difficulties.

In a press briefing on Thursday, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi confirmed that, in the past few months, four Indonesian sailors who had been registered to Chinese fishing vessel Long Xin 629 had died.

One of the sailors, identified only as EP, died at the Busan Medical Center in South Korea on April 27. Another sailor, identified as AR, died on Chinese fishing vessel Tian Yu 8 on March 30. Two other sailors died on Long Xin 629 in December 2019.

“On April 26, the Indonesian Embassy [in Seoul] was informed that a citizen with the initials EP was sick. When they contacted him, he said that he had long suffered from difficulty breathing and had coughed up blood,” Retno said. “The Busan Medical Center said that he died from pneumonia.”

Retno said that, according to a statement from Tian Yu 8, AR had fallen ill on March 26 and was moved from Long Xin 629 to Tian Yu 8 to be taken to port for treatment. However, AR died before the ship reached port and was buried at sea on the morning of March 31.

“According to the embassy, the ship had informed AR’s family and received approval for a burial at sea on March 30,” she said.

The two sailors who died in December were said to be buried at sea after dying of an infectious disease.

The Migrant Care advocacy group criticized the treatment of Indonesian crewmen on the Chinese vessels, saying that the harsh work environment infringed on their basic human rights.

“What these Indonesian crewmen experienced was a violation of their human rights. They were robbed of their freedom by working in an inappropriate environment. They were deprived of their right to information and, ultimately, they were robbed of their right to live,” Migrant Care executive director Wahyu Susilo said in a statement, adding that the case was a form of slavery in modern times.

Retno said the Foreign Ministry had summoned Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Xiao Qian on Thursday to express concerns about the alleged mistreatment of Indonesian workers aboard Chinese fishing vessels.

“In regard to the burial at sea for the three Indonesians, the Indonesian government has again demanded clarification on whether the burials followed the ILO [International Labor Organization] standards. The Indonesian government also expressed concerns over the poor living conditions on the ships that allegedly caused the death of the four Indonesian crew members,” she said.

She also demanded that Chinese authorities conduct an investigation on the working conditions of the fishing ships.

“If the investigation has found that there’s a violation, then we want the Chinese authorities to uphold enforcement that is fair,” she said.

Indonesia also asked the Chinese government to help ensure that Chinese companies fulfill the workers’ rights, including their salaries, and provide safe working conditions.

In his response, the Chinese ambassador assured Indonesian officials that his government would make sure the companies would be accountable to regulations and contracts.

Welcome to life @Vojthas :(

I feel like you forgot to mention something significant that happened a year ago, and seems to have brightened your outlook a little, but I’ll let it slide :p

I was around this time that we really started to get serious about the foundation of Totallympics Media. Just a month ago I had peaked your interest when I suggested doing an international sport podcast. Fast forward one year, and we’re experienced podcast hosts, live bloggers during multiple multi-sports games, and the founders of a wonderful website.

We’re not officially to the one year anniversary of Totallympics Media, but I don’t see why we can’t celebrate a little early. I’ve said this before, but working with you was arguably the best opportunity I’ve had as a journalist. Everything’s a little dark right now, but we both know that there’s bigs things to come.

Yes, that's more a less my point - if I don't create myself (not alone, of course) a place to contribute, nobody would care that I can do it well, no other company wants me to cooperate with them. That's what I mean as being nobody. And believe me, I'm tired of that.

It’s seems like the UIPM still has you on their radar, but I don’t how your time with them ended last time. I think you’ll get more opportunities at some point. As we grow the website, I’d imagine some opportunities will arise.

A whole lot of people have been woken up rather roughly.

Not really. That area is pretty uninhabited outside of some very small rural towns. The only cities that seemed to have felt the earthquake were Las Vegas, Reno, and maybe Fresno or Sacramento. We felt nothing down in Southern California.

    • Qualification status that could realistically change this week, barring (except where noted) new time qualifying performances :   Men   500m : pretty much done   1000m : pretty much done   1500m : pretty much done   5000m : one outlier at the moment  Semirunniy. He's currently not qualified for the distance being 18/15 in the rankings and R1 time-wise. He could still punch his ticket :    either by getting into the top 15 with a very good result (a podium or even a win would be needed). If it is at the expanse of  Henriksen or, less likely,  Swings, then the loser is out. If it is at the expanse of any other, then  Sasaki is out.  or by hoping Lorello gets into the top 15 at the expanse of Henriksen or Swings. or by going faster than Sasaki (6'08''834) which seems reachable after his 10k, even in Hamar.   10000m : once again Henriksen is on the bubble. If  Maly, Petzold of  Farthofer gets into the top 9 at the expanse of Malfatti or Snellink, then he's out.    Mass-start : not much at stake considering most of the reserve skaters will already receive an additional quota - at the moment    . Morino  will try to enter top 32 and be in those additional quota spots.    Team pursuit : pretty much done   Women   500m : pretty much done   1000m : with  Thorup not cleared to participate one more spot is up for grabs.  Scholz would need to be in front of both Herzog (done as she's not entered) and Czerwonka (7 points) after this final week.  Silaeva would be left out.    1500m : Lamarche not competing and  Zofia Braun being promoted to A division, Poland has got a real shot at a second quota. Braun will need to stay in front of Scholz and Weidemann, who could still finish ahead of her depending on how good Braun fares in A division.  Smedding would suffer from a Polish rise.   3000m : match-up between  Yang and  Horikawa only separated by 3 points. At the moment Yang is out (R2) but if they exchange position in the standings then Horikawa is out (R1). They could also both finish ahead of Hofmann, at the expanse of  Golubeva ultimately.  Jasch has a small shot at a second German quota too, by edging the former two skaters, eliminating them.    5000m : pretty much done   Mass-start :  Santo Rodrigues is hanging on by a thread. The cruelty of it is that those immediately behind her -    - will get an aditional spot anyways, so it does not really matter if they finish in the top 24 ahead of her, except it would allow France to enter a second skater and two girls in the MS.   Team pursuit : three-way asymetrical tie for the last SOQP spot between   and , all in division A. Norway needs to beat both as they can't rely on a time Q, Kazakhstan needs to beat Norway to ensure (if they fail to beat China) the first SOQT spot and avoid the Italian wild-card*, whereas China is pretty safe. *  is currently out but they "only" need to get into a reserve spot to be qualified, which is going faster than 3'00'92 (or faster than Norway if they too decide to skate faster). They were not far off this mark in Hamar earlier this year but the team was in a better shape overall.
