Team GB at the World Athletics Championships

Day 1 - Evening

 

Men's 3,000m Steeplechase (Heats) - No Brits in Action.

 

Women's Long Jump (Qualifying)- Jaz Sawyers is back in a GB vest and competes in Group B. With a season's best of 6.89m she's about 10th overall by SB so should have good chance of getting into the final.

 

Women's 100m (Heats) - Dina Asher-Smith (Heat 2), Daryll Neita (Heat 5) and Amy Hunt (Heat 6) aiming for top 3 finish or 3 fastest loser spots. 

Expectations - All world class athletes with aspirations of getting to the final. DAS is 1 of only 2 athletes to go under 11 seconds in her heat. Neita is 3rd fastest by SB in her heat and could be challenged by Hungarian Takacs. Hunt probably has the toughest draw with White, Bertrand and Dosso. All 3 are capable of progressing and I think that they should all advance. 

 

Men's Pole Vault (Qualifying)- No Brits in Action.

 

Women's 1,500m (Heats)- Erin Wallace (Heat 1), Revee Walcott-Nolan (Heat 2) and Laura Muir (Heat 4) all looking for a top 6 finish to advance.

Expectations - All well capable of getting to semi-finals and final so expect all three to do enough to progress. Shame that Georgia Hunter Bell elected not to double up. 

 

Men's 100m (Heats) - Romell Glave (Heat 1), Jeremiah Azu (Heat 4) and Zharnel Hughes (Heat 6) all targeting top 3 finish or 3 fastest loser spots. 

Expectations - All capable of getting through, and think at least 2 will progress, but have a feeling that at least 1 of them may have to rely on fastest loser spot. 

 

Men's Shot Put (Final) - Scott Lincoln qualified in 5th with 21.00m. Hopefully he can build on that and, whilst a medal is likely beyond him, he could/should be aiming for top 6.

 

Women's 10,000m (Final) - Megan Keith and Cali Haugher-Thackery both compete. Haugher-Thackery lowered her PB earlier this year, but neither she or Keith are likely to trouble the podium. A top 12 finish and/or being the first European to finish would be decent result.  

 

Mixed 4x400m Relay (Final) - GB qualified as second fastest this morning. Expect Netherlands to bring in Bol which would likely put gold and silver out of reach. Would like to see GB change out Davies but will need to wait and see.

Expectations - GB could finish anywhere from 3rd to 5th. A lot will depend on changes made to the squads, but the battle for bronze could come down to fight between GB and Italy.

Day 1 - Evening Results

 

Women's Long Jump (Qualifying)- Jaz Sawyers misses out on a place in the final after placing 16th overall with a jump of 6.54m - well down on the automatic qualifying of 6.75m and 6cm shy of 12th place. It's a shame, but in the context of her return from injury perhaps it is understandable. 

 

Women's 100m (Heats) - All 3 Brits safely through (although I actually fell asleep so didn't see them ) 

 

Women's 1,500m (Heats)- Erin Wallace (Heat 1) finishes in 8th and doesn't progress. Revee Walcott-Nolan (Heat 2) qualifies for semi finals but looked far from convincing. Laura Muir (Heat 4) - Lord knows what happened to her in the last 100m. Such a shame given she seemed to be rounding into decent form. 

 

Men's 100m (Heats) - Romell Glave (Heat 1) finished 4 in 10 flat so had to rely on fastest loser spot. Jeremiah Azu (Heat 4) and Zharnel Hughes (Heat 6) both take automatic spots. Hughes looked the most likely to get to the final.  

 

Men's Shot Put (Final) - Scott Lincoln qualified for the final in 5th with 21.00m - and finishes 8th in the final with 21.00m. It was the highest place by a brit in a Shot Put final so can't really complain.

 

Women's 10,000m (Final) - Megan Keith and Cali Haugher-Thackery finish in 10th and 11th so both hit my target of top 12 finish. m. A top 12 finish and/or being the first European to finish would be decent result.  

 

Mixed 4x400m Relay (Final) - GB finished a disappointing 5th. The selectors kept faith with Lewis Davies and instead switched out Yemi Mary John. Harries and Yeargin were left with too much to do - had we been better placed, I think the bronze was there for the taking. Can't help thinking this was a missed opportunity to get the medal count moving on day 1

i think harries ran his leg incredibley poorly, he could of sat on the back of the group but instead burned all his matches and looked cooked at 200m mark

I dont think he did much wrong tbh. He played to his strengths as a strong 200 runner and got us the crucial more inside 2nd lane at the changeover, kept us in the medal conversation + still split a great 44.4.

 

If we're looking for someone to blame it has to be Davey who split 45.7 at the start, almost a full second slower than his season's best and was why Harries had to go out fast. Yeargin also only split 50.7 which was about 6 tenths slower than the morning, and as she acknowledged in her interview she should've made her move on the backstraight and not left it to a last 100 burn up.

I mean, if we want to blame anyone, blame our individual runners who selfishly put their own event ahead of the relay.  Not to mention World Athletics for putting the heats of the individual the day after the relay, which is just dumb scheduling. 

 

We don't have USA depth to be able to have relay only runners without it making a difference. And it's tough, in my opinion, to expect the individual event athletes to prioritise the mixed relay over their own event. With only one switch being allowed it was always going to make for some tough choices. 

 

Fair play to YMJ therefore, for being willing to do the job in the heat.

Well, after those mental heats, they all made the 'right' decision still to skip the relay imo. Especially on the men's side. Crazy fast heats today.

Is it better to go home empty handed having lost in the first round or semi-finals of the individual event, or go home with a bronze medal from the mixed relay? I take the point that the scheduling is a mess, but we did have 400 hurdlers that could potentially have been swapped in.

Ultimately the important thing that determines DL qualification, sponsorship, UK Athletics funding etc etc is going to be individual rankings so.....
