So the Chicago Blackhawks are part of the 'Original Six' NHL teams, one of the oldest and most historic NHL teams in the league. They have won the Stanley Cup (NHL championship) 6 times in their history which is the 5th most of any active team in the league. 3 of those championships came during the 2010s which they won during the 2009-10, 2012-13, and 2014-15 seasons. And so they finished this season with the 3rd worst record in the league but they got to pick first overall because they won the draft lottery. And who just happens to be in this draft? A once in a generation talent who's regarded as the most talented prospect since 2015. Many fans believe that the lottery was rigged so that the historic big market team would have a new superstar immediately after losing their previous two superstars.

 

It is also worth mentioning that one of my favourite teams is the Vancouver Canucks. The Blackhawks and Canucks were rivalries for many years during the late 200s and early 2010s and the Blackhawks tortured the Canucks in the playoffs until 2011 when they finally won a series against them. Connor Bedard, the player that they drafted, is from North Vancouver, which is in the metro Vancouver area, so it just adds salt to the wound to see a local prodigy go to a rival team.

 

The most important part of all this is that the Blackhawks covered up a sexual assault case of one of their players by a member of the team staff in 2010 that wasn't revealed until a decade later. Despite the player bringing up the incident to management, nothing was done about it and the staff member later went on to work for a couple of universities where he also was accused of sexual assault. Many people believe that the Blackhawks weren't punished fairly for this incident and that they should have had their draft pick taken away from them.

So it's mostly just a anti-Blackhawks thing by people who are fans of their main rivals?  

 

I didn't know also in things like NHL people so often think that whoever they don't like is being favoured by the people on top  

 

And about the assault case: since that was apparently made public in 2021, shouldn't that have resulted in a draft pick or some form of punishment for last season, instead of for a season two years later?

So, the biggest prospect goes to a huge market aka the third biggest city in USA instead of Anaheim or Columbus? Is the NHL lottery as fixed as "Ewing to New York" back in the day?

Even if things aren't fixed, if a big player gets out of something well, people are going to say it's fixed anyway.

A quick look at the #1 draft lottery in NHL suggests it always goes to a big market or historically successful franchise amid a slump. Columbus in 2002 got their #1 via a trade, other than that it's always the big markets. In the last 15 years the #1 pick went to New York area or Edmonton Oilers like 90% of the time And of course Maple Leafs won the Auston Matthews lottery. Columbus? Anaheim? The Coyotes mess? Neah, they are the Grizzlies or Timberwolves of NBA. They will never win a lottery when a hyped prospect comes around. Timberwolves only "won" the lottery in one of the most anonymous NBA drafts in recent memory

Apparently Chicago simply had the third-best chance of getting the number one pick though?

Not that odd to get it then in a lottery where the single highest chance for any one team is still only 25%.

The whole lottery is still fishy as hell. The whole fear of tanking is a mirage, some teams are perenially bad and it doesn't have anything to do with trying to acquire #1 draft pick. That's the downside of having no relegation system, you can suck for decades and you still play against all the top teams. Moreover NHL is not NBA, two or three players won't make you a contender overnight.
