I double up the shitty level, Szczurek means "Little Rat" in Polish :p

Obviously his name is basically unpronounceable for any non-Slavic throat

Which is why we - or at least I - just basically say "Surek" :p

Yeah, this could fly. Polish digraphs take no prisoners otherwise :p

Well, the culmination for commentators came in football with Szczęsny, Piszczek and Błaszczykowski. Not to mention our runner, Kszczot. :)

As for Szczęsny there's a common reference in the hockey players Peter & Paul Stastny. If any English commentator realized that, they'd pronounce his name that way instead of botching it most of the time. Szczęsny & Stastny basically mean the same thing.

Speaking of tough names (I know, it's not biathlon but it's the offseason yet).

US are going with Doherty and Dunklee in the Single Mixed, arguably their strongest two.

Mixed will be Egan - Reid - Nordgren - Howe - First two are solid, Nordgren can be decent, Howe is a wildcard.  If they were to crack the top 15 with this line-up, I would be ecstatic!

By the way, Forucade and J T Boe will anchor their teams in the Mixed.  Should be great fun!

26 teams in the single mixed with Croatia the only one not in the mixed.

You will have to go a long way to beat Canadian Skeleton slider Dave Greszczyszyn, which I believe is a Ukrainian name transliterated into Polish and then adopted into English.

And don’t start me with Gaelic names. My cousin’s daughter is Caoimhe......

.....it’s pronounced Kiva.  Only the i is pronounced as it would be in any other language.

    • Despite total domination by the Norwegian men (and yes, it's exhausting and boring), the accomplishments this weekend of Emil Iversen and Einar Hedegart are worth highlighting, despite them being Norwegian.    Iversen was dropped by the Norwegian national team after the opener in Beitostølen 2 weeks ago and was not taken to Ruka. Instead, he won both the 10k and 20k Interval Classic starts in Gålå in the Norwegian Cup last week, which granted him a spot on the start line in Trondheim. He took full advantage of that opportunity and finished on the podium in the skiathlon, and finished just off the podium in today's 10k Interval Freestyle. This definitely puts his name in serious contention for a spot on the Olympic team, which looked incredibly doubtful just a few days ago.    Einar Hedegart, the 24-year-old biathlete who decided to challenge the stereotype that biathletes are inferior skiers to their cross-country counterparts, just won the 10k Interval Start against all of Norway's best in a de facto Olympic trial.    Yes, it's exhausting seeing nothing but Norwegian flags on the men's side, but there can be excitement just beneath the surface at times.
