the great day of the Italian Foil, triumphing in both of today's events (and collecting 4 overall medals in 2 competitions)...:cheer:

finally, the negative streak is over! Alice Volpi eventually came back to success after the shameful world champs and first event of the season...and also Martina Batini is back on the podium after quite some time (about 1 year ago)...

and hopefully it's a great anticipation of what we're gonna see in a few months also Foconi's success in Tokyo in the Olympic Test Event...

on the other side, just another unwatchable outing of all our women's sabre specialists in Salt Lake City...no one of the National Team regular members could go beyond the round of 64...:wall::spank:

https://tokyo2020.fie.org/ranks?weapon=F&gender=M

the USA are more and more safe into the lead, with only France keeping the pace...

Italy are making a little step ahead of their main rivals for the 3rd and/or 4th place, as did Korea by edging Hong Kong out of the top 4...

Russia, however, are getting closer and closer to the top 4...

for what concerns the other continental spots, Egypt are safe in the top 16, meanwhile Canada are losing ground and now they are dangerously close to the 16th place line (and Brazil couldn't take advantage of today's big chance, as they also missed out on a place in the top 16 in Tokyo)...

USA, yes...

France, basically yes, even if it's not mathematical

Italy, not at all...there are 4 teams (ITA, KOR, HKG and RUS) for 2 places...and if both KOR and HKG end up in 3rd and 4th place, one between ITA and RUS will stay home (as it's true for the opposite, if ITA and RUS both make it into the top 4, then 1 beetween KOR and HKG have to watch the Games on TV)...

and this fight will also have implications on the European and Asian continental spots...

it will be a close fight until the last competition of the OQP...

    • impossible, there are not enough venues in both towns and I mean, Milan doesn't have an Olympic Stadium, a decent Tennis Complex and a big Swimming Complex (not to mention the sea) Rome, on the other hand, doesn't have a Rowing/Canoeing Basin nor arenas and stadiums for the team sports beyond football and rugby there's no chance that all those venues would be built from scratch, meanwhile if we use both cities we already have almost everything we need, especially the most expensive and controversial sites

    • https://nypost.com/2026/01/31/sports/team-canada-skeleton-coach-joe-cecchini-speaks-out-after-american-katie-uhlaender-manipulation-claim/   Oh the drama....   Cecchini: “I don’t really wanna speak negatively about Katie, but Katie was not on the World Cup team. She wasn’t a top-tier athlete in that program anymore. She was at the end of her career. I would personally would rather race against Katie. She’s not as competitive as the other athletes,” he said. “It’s probably really unfair to say and not really where I want to go with this but that’s where we are with that.”   Uhlaender: “If I were Canada, I would be concerned in how this coach is representing the Olympic values for his country,” Uhlaender told Fox News Digital. “He hurt a whole field of athletes, all with dreams, and this sends the message that they don’t matter unless they are number one. All athletes matter, and we all deserve to compete fairly, with integrity, and respect. He did not respect anyone in that field. “This is not about my resume or how good the athletes were in the race. This is about the fact that he intentionally manipulated the competition to hurt myself and 13 other countries because he felt it necessary to eliminate all possibility. That is against the spirit of sport and not what the Olympic movement represents.”   Isn't it great when other people's dirty laundry is aired?  /sarcasm     (I was a little surprised to see NPR pick this up, but per this article, Uhlaender preemptively recorded the phone call after receiving a text from Cecchini that said he had 'bad news' for her.)
    • Idea (that I don't want to mess with right now, but someone else can steal the idea): Could feed the docs from LA28 + Paris 2024 through AI and see what it says.  (Would just take downloading them, perhaps merging them for ease of upload, and passing it through.)

    • Slowly going through the documents.   Looks like canoe slalom qualifiers will be a bit different. More kayak cross quotas which will let nations to essentially qualify two kayakers.
    • How about we choose either Rome or Milano  I hate this timeline we have entered of multiple host cities / countries. The football World Cup became ludicrous, we don't need the Olympics to join them. At least not more than they already are.

The FIBA World Cup Qualifier in P.R. is a throwaway tour- nament for Team USA after the Gold Medal Game debacle.
