and can someone also explain why Russia was banned for two years for state sponsored doping yet their whole team who qualified is allowed to compete here in Tokyo ? They didn't have any extra doping controls or vetting process they had to go through. They are dominating certain sports, do you believe it's actual talent or results from doping

That whole situation is a joke.  They cheated at the highest level across the board and their punishment is....they can't use their flag and have to slightly change their name.  If it was Uganda or Mongolia they'd be banned.

Idk if any of their athletes are doping here, but history and the complete lack of consequences suggest that it's likely.  Of course Italy just had a sprinter who barely ever got under 10 seconds win the gold medal suddenly, so I'm not saying only one country has suspicious results.

yeah its just confusing that they are banned yet their entire team is here competing and dominating. And athletes that have been proven to have doped before like efimova in the breastroke are allowed to compete is mind blowing

Canada is now entirely out of women's wrestling. The wrestler who beat Lappage got demolished in the following round.

That Mongolian wrestler was something else. There was no chance Lappage would have beaten her in a repechage either but the hope would have been alive.

Another Canadian "medal threat" finishes last....in qualifying.

I mean I was uncertain that the team pursuit would be contending for a medal - but that ride was a mess. Hope they can hold it together tomorrow.

I had my doubts after Italy and Germany, but Aus left the door open for a top 4.  They were doing great till the last 2 laps.

Oh well.  On to soccer.

They can still contend for the bronze medal if they have a solid ride tomorrow - I have a feeling we will see at least one of the bottom 4 teams in that round.

EDIT: I just learned the rules are different for women and men re: this.

So Canada still has a shot at a medal?

    • Of the top teams the world with traditions, only Portugal didn`t play in 3 World Cups in a row: 1986-2002 (1990, 1994 and 1998), but then fewer teams played in the World Cup than now. I don't really remember what caused the crisis in Portuguese football in the 1990s or how it was done with this later? Perhaps we should follow their example?
    • Well... If not qualifying for the World Cup for the third consecutive time isn't enough to bring about change in Italy, I can't imagine what will be.
    • Gravina is simply stupid and probably has some kind of hold over other important key figures in Italian football, since he was elected in 2024 with a majority of over 90% of the votes... I have a hard time imagining it any other way. Compared to him, even Carraro, Berlusconi and Moggi seem like nice and kind gentlemens   Some people believe that Calciopoli in 2006 began the decline of Italian football and that may be true. It only got worse from there, not counting a single accidental Euro 2021 win- something similar to Greece in 2004. In 2009 Roberto Baggio prepared a 900-page report on necessary reforms in Italian football, but the then-FIGC board tossed it into the trash bin. Now we see the consequences...
    • I thought our former football President was greedy, selfish, power hungry and delusional, but apparently he has an equal counterpart in Gravina. Some people just lack common decency.
    • Well, it's possible that Italians may be more bitter towards short track officials after the robbery they perpetrated against Sighel at the Olympics and therefore more willing to comment and criticize them, but it doesn't make the decision any less ridiculous.   Also, the fact we are Italians, and therefore used to the low standards of football refereeing, makes us especially qualified and trained to identify biased/crooked/incompetent judging
    • I think it was never in the history of our sport has there been anyone as brazen and stupid as Gravina. Before presidents would resign, or at least hide for a while, rather than go into a full-blow scandalous attitude with full larrogance and pride. I hope this idiot gets fired anyway, even if he doesn't resign.
